This week has been an amazing week for Drive for the Cure, we committed $200,000.00 to Ridge Meadows Hospital and Langley Memorial Hospital for the purchase of the Sentimag System with Endomag-(Magseed Marker)
A little about the equipment and the procedure a women goes through prior to her breast mastectomy.
Past method:
A wire inserted in the breast before surgery is a procedure known as wire localization or needle localization. It is used to mark the exact location of an abnormality, such as a small tumor or suspicious area, that can be seen on imaging (mammogram or ultrasound) but cannot be felt by hand
NEW with Sentimag System and Magseed Marker:
Magseed insertion is a minimally invasive procedure where a tiny metallic marker, smaller than a grain of rice, is placed into breast tissue to guide surgeons in removing non-palpable tumors. Unlike traditional wire localization, it can be implanted up to 30 days or more before surgery, allowing for flexible scheduling and a more comfortable patient experience
Key Benefits over Traditional Wires
• Increased Comfort: There are no wires protruding from the breast, which reduces physical discomfort and the risk of the marker being accidentally displaced.
• Logistical Flexibility: The procedure is decoupled from the day of surgery, removing the need for a stressful early-morning radiology appointment before the operation.
• Surgical Precision: The surgeon uses a handheld magnetic probe (Sentimag) to locate the seed to the millimeter, potentially leading to more accurate tumor removal and better cosmetic outcomes
