Today, on Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day, we pause to honor the babies who are forever part of our stories, and the parents who continue to love, remember, and hope.

To every family walking this path — please know you are not alone in your grief. Your baby’s memory is precious, and your story deserves to be held with gentleness and respect.

IWK Health continues to follow the evidence-based best practices of credible Canadian medical bodies, including the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and Health Canada, which continue to recommend acetaminophen as a safe and appropriate first-line option for managing fever and pain during pregnancy when medically needed, at recommended doses and for the shortest duration necessary.

Untreated fever and pain in pregnant women can pose risks to the unborn child. Families and pregnant women should continue to follow the advice of their health care providers.

There is no conclusive evidence of a causal link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism.

Every year, thousands of families experience the emotional rollercoaster of having a newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It can be one of the most difficult and uncertain times for a young family.

As doulas, our support doesn’t end at birth. For families with babies in the NICU, our role can shift to offering emotional guidance, advocating for informed decisions, and simply being a steady, compassionate presence in a time of overwhelm.

Let’s honour those in the NICU, the families supporting them, and the healthcare teams providing essential care. And let’s recognize the doulas walking alongside them, ensuring no parent feels alone on this journey. 💛
