Birchwood is excited to announce our newest full-time clinician, Maria Shaheen!

Maria is a registered clinical social worker with extensive experience working both privately and within the public health system. She works with clients across the lifespan dealing with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic stress, personality disorders, life transitions, parenting challenges, and executive dysfunction.

We are excited to welcome Megan Reid to our team!

Megan is an Occupational Therapist with over seven years of experience working in the private sector. She completed her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University and is a registered member of the Nova Scotia Occupational Therapy Regulator (NSOTR).

Megan offers a range of Occupational Therapy services and therapeutic techniques to support and facilitate independence, enjoyment, and meaning in everyday life. Her areas of support include implementing structured daily routines; addressing both psychological and physical barriers to functioning; executive functioning skills such as organization, planning, and time management; and providing education to foster understanding, awareness, improved coping, and self-compassion.

We’re excited to welcome a new clinician to our team, Patrick Gordon! He is now accepting school-aged children and young adults for counselling services.

Please note that due to potential school-based conflicts, he may not be able to take on all referrals. Availability will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and is limited.

If you are looking for help with anxiety & stress, low mood, school refusal or school challenges, executive functioning skills (organization, planning, time management), or life skills and confidence building, Patrick is a great fit for you!

Report Card Season is Upon Us: Understanding Your Child Beyond the Grades

As report cards begin to come home, many children (and parents) experience a mix of pride, stress, and uncertainty.

Academic feedback can be helpful, but it often reflects only one piece of a child’s broader learning profile. When a child is struggling, appearing inconsistent, or feeling overwhelmed, it can leave families wondering why and what to do next.

A psychoeducational assessment can offer meaningful clarity. By exploring how your child’s brain processes information, where their strengths lie, and which challenges may be affecting their academic performance, families gain a deeper and more compassionate understanding of their child’s learning needs.
