This is an excellent article for parents that have questions about ADHD! Child Mind Institute

“Because the symptoms of ADHD can also be the result of other issues, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, a professional diagnosing your child should carefully rule out other possible reasons for his behavior.”

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) find it unusually difficult to concentrate on tasks, to pay attention, to sit still, and to control impulsive behavior. This ADHD guide offers parents the information you need to understand the behaviors associated with the attention diso...

Your Young Child May Not Need an ADHD Assessment - But You Can Still Receive Support

Many parents worry when their young child struggles with big emotions, attention, or behaviour. Meltdowns, lack of focus, high energy, or difficulty regulating can leave families wondering about ADHD.

For children under age six, many of these behaviours are part of typical development as self-regulation skills are still emerging.

Because of this, an ADHD assessment may not always be the most helpful first step.

At ElevateMinds, our psychologists and behaviour specialist work with families to better understand their child’s behaviour and build practical strategies for navigating emotions and behaviour at home.

Research shows that behavioural support and parent strategies are the recommended first step for young children with attention and behaviour challenges.

If things feel overwhelming right now, support is available. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Happy International Women’s Day

Today we celebrate the strength, leadership, and contributions of women in our communities.

At ElevateMinds Collaborative Practice, we are proud to be a team of women who are deeply committed to supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families. Our work is grounded in compassion, knowledge, and a shared belief that when people are supported, they can grow, learn, and thrive.

We are also grateful to be part of a community filled with strong women - mothers, caregivers, educators, health professionals, and leaders - who advocate every day for the wellbeing of others.

Today is a reminder of the importance of lifting one another up, supporting each other’s work, and continuing to create spaces where women and families can access the support they need.

Challenges with sensory processing can be extremely energy draining!!

Many people with ADHD experience differences in how their brains process sensory information, which can make everyday environments (e.g. classrooms, busy spaces, or noisy settings) feel overwhelming and require significant energy to manage.

“Individuals with ADHD showed significantly higher levels of atypical sensory processing than control groups.”

Many families find that questions arise as children grow and school expectations change.

If you or your child previously received an assessment or diagnosis but it has been a few years, a consultation can help review the results and consider how developmental changes may be influencing current learning and support needs. Consultation appointments can also provide an opportunity for children or adolescents to talk through their assessment results or diagnosis in a supportive, developmentally appropriate way and better understand their own learning profile.

Reach out if you would like more information about psychoeducational consultation services.

This article from one of our favorites, Mona Delahooke, Ph.D., is a great read on why we need to shift the mindset on understanding behavior.

"Trauma-responsive care recognizes that behaviors are not primarily about defiance or manipulation. They are communications from a protective autonomic nervous system. A child who "acts out" is not choosing to misbehave; their nervous system is responding to perceived threat, whether that threat is visible to adults or not."

https://www.pesi.com/blogs/posts/why-trauma-responsive-care-requires-a-paradigm-shift-in-how-we-see-behavior/?fbclid=IwZnRzaAQTMVtleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEe5VNn0HLowXqP7-_vtbn1JFdBfoykz77VdwklmRkeV0U93gcYS4SnxVMKdjE_aem_IIUSHqLURjkKmDE1-i4_pw&d=m

Clinicians have been trained to observe, categorize, and intervene on behavior. But what if the framework we've inherited, one built on compliance, consequences, and behavioral modification, is fundamentally misaligned with how traumatized nervous systems actually work?
