Diabetes and its treatment will be your constant companions and will most likely lead you to experience certain emotions. You may have felt some of them more intensely when you were first diagnosed, when your treatment changed, when you were hospitalized or when you developed complications.

November is according to Diabetes Canada Every day, 640 Canadians are diagnosed with diabetes, or 1 person every 3 minutes—and diabetes is not slowing down. RNAO found regardless of the diabetes type, over time, failure to achieve optimal glycemic control can cause damage to the body’s small and large blood vessels and nerves. This damage can affect the functioning of many body organs and interfere with wound healing.
🔸Foot complications continue to be a major cause of morbidity and disability among people with diabetes.
🔸In Ontario, the adjusted rates of lower extremity amputation are approximately 20 times higher for people with diabetes than in persons without diabetes
🔸The incidence of foot ulcers in people with diabetes was 2.2% annually, and that past history of foot ulcers or history of amputation was strongly related to future ulcer risk.
🔸The sequence of events leading to lower extremity ulceration and amputation in diabetes is a complex process with many factors combining to increase the likelihood that a foot injury or infection will occur and healing will be delayed.
🔸The prevention of such traumatic “pivotal” events, together with the early identification and prompt treatment of foot problems can reduce the incidence of foot ulceration and amputation.
This can be achieved through a program of risk assessment, self-care education and regular reinforcement of self-care.

Tips on foot care for people with diabetes

Inspect both feet daily, including the area between the toes. Ask a caregiver to do this if you are unable to.
Wash the feet daily with water at room temperature, with careful drying, especially between the toes.
Use lubricating oils or creams for dry skin, but not between the toes.
Cut nails straight across.
Do not remove corns and calluses using a chemical agent or plaster. They should not be excised at home and must be managed by trained staff.
Always wear socks with shoes and check inside shoes for foreign objects before wearing them.
Avoid walking barefoot at all times.
Ensure a qualified healthcare provider examines your feet regularly.
Notify the healthcare provider at once if a blister, cut, scratch, or sore develops.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and as we use this time to take inventory of all that we’re grateful for, let us add feet 👣 to the list. We use our feet 👣 so often and so constantly that it is easy to take them for granted when everything is working well. Maybe your feet 👣 don’t look perfect, and maybe they have pain at times. Nevertheless, our feet 👣 are exquisitely designed to support and propel us through all the various movements of life.
