We are excited to share that Modern Medical Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic is now open in Thunder Bay, and we are accepting patients.

After years of careful planning, design, and construction with some of Thunder Bay’s most skilled professionals, our new facility has been built with safety and excellence at the forefront. From reinforced foundations and secure oxygen systems to specialized staff training with North America’s top hyperbaric educators, every detail has been carefully considered to bring the best possible care to our community.

We are proud to offer care in eight state-of-the-art Sigma 36 Perry Baromedical chambers — among the safest and most advanced hyperbaric chambers available in North America.

Training Completed – 29 Staff Certified! 🎉

After an intense 6-day training marathon, running from 8AM to as late as 6PM, we are proud to share that 29 members of our team have successfully completed and been certified in two vital areas of hyperbaric operations and safety.

This comprehensive training included all staff across the board - from our Medical Director, Safety Director, and Clinical Operations Manager to our Hyperbaric Technicians, Receptionists and Support Staff - ensuring every team member is aligned, educated, and empowered to deliver the highest standards of care.

The 14 OHIP-Covered Conditions for HBOT
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is OHIP-covered in Ontario — but only for specific medical indications recognized by Health Canada.

Here are the 14 approved uses:
1️⃣Carbon monoxide poisoning
2️⃣Gas embolism / decompression sickness
3️⃣Necrotizing soft tissue infections (e.g., gas gangrene)
4️⃣Radiation tissue damage (soft tissue & bone)
5️⃣Osteoradionecrosis (especially jaw)
6️⃣Diabetic foot ulcers & certain problem wounds
7️⃣Chronic bone infections (refractory osteomyelitis)
8️⃣Crush injuries / compartment syndrome
9️⃣Compromised skin grafts & flaps
1️⃣0️⃣Severe anemia (when transfusion not possible)
1️⃣1️⃣Thermal burns
1️⃣2️⃣Idiopathic sudden hearing loss
1️⃣3️⃣Intracranial abscess
1️⃣4️⃣Exceptional blood loss

📢Instructor Spotlight: Sherri Ferguson – Advancing Research & Safety Standards

We are thrilled to introduce Sherri Ferguson, MSc, one of the leading voices in hyperbaric and diving safety here in Canada.

Sherri is the President of Shanfée Research & Consulting Ltd., with a Masters of Science in clinical physiology from Simon Fraser University. Over her 18 years directing the Environmental Medicine and Physiology Unit at SFU, she conducted ground-breaking research on cardiac function, decompression, hypoxia, and brain activity.

She is a subject matter expert serving on CSA and UHMS safety committees, directly shaping the standards that guide our work in Canada and beyond.

During our week long course, Sherri will be guiding us through team roles, responsibilities, and the regulatory environment—essential knowledge for anyone working in hyperbaric medicine.

We are honoured to learn from her expertise as she continues to raise the bar for safety, science, and clinical excellence.

📣Instructor Spotlight: Robert Sheffield – Educator, Author & Safety Leader

Our next spotlight shines on Robert “Rob” Sheffield, BA, CHT, Director of Education with International ATMO.

Rob brings 30+ years of hyperbaric medicine experience as a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist, educator, and consultant. He has trained thousands of clinicians worldwide and co-created the Hyperbaric Safety Director Course in 2001—still regarded as the gold standard in hyperbaric training.

Beyond teaching, Rob is a published author, contributing to 8 books and a book chapter on hyperbaric safety and wound care. His expertise spans risk assessment, fire chemistry, material selection, and chamber operations, making him an invaluable guide in our journey.

We are privileged to benefit from Rob’s decades of leadership in hyperbaric safety, medical education, and clinical excellence.

📢Instructor Spotlight: Francois Burman - Leading Global Standards in Hyperbaric Safety

We’re officially underway with our Hyperbaric Safety Specialist Course.

Our first instructor is Francois Burman, Director of Underwater and Hyperbaric Safety at Divers Alert Network (DAN).

Francois brings decades of experience in life support systems, risk management, and underwater engineering. He has played a leading role in establishing international hyperbaric safety standards and has trained countless professionals worldwide.

With his expertise, we’re diving into critical topics such as Hyperbaric Safety Management and the Principles of Risk Management—laying the foundation for safe and effective hyperbaric operations.

We are honoured to have Francois guide us through the opening sessions of this course.
