Did you know that our regional amputation rate is double the provincial average, while indigenous communities have 7x the provincial average! A diabetes diagnosis can reduce foot sensation, so proper footwear is important in preventing pressures, ulcers, and amputation.

Rachel and Monica were on-site at the Stepping Out for Foot Health event to educate the public how Thunder Bay Orthopaedic can help. We were joined by other like-minded agencies, fundraising for life-saving footwear for people living with diabetes.

Meet the Team Thursdays!

Meet Ian McWhirter - Orthotic Resident, American Board Certified Orthotist & Prosthetist

Ian is a dedicated Orthotic Resident who takes pride in providing personalized, patient-centered care. He completed his Bachelor of Arts at Metropolitan State University in 2014 and went on to earn his Master of Science in Orthotics & Prosthetics from Concordia University in 2018.

Ian specializes in lower extremity orthotics, spinal and post-operative bracing, and cranial remolding, helping patients enhance mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life through thorough assessment and custom solutions. His calm demeanor, technical skill, and compassionate approach make him a valued part of our clinical team.

Outside of the clinic, Ian enjoys spending time with his daughter, as well as fishing and sailing - activities that allow him to relax and recharge outdoors.

We’re thrilled to feature Ian this week and showcase the expertise and care he brings to every patient he meets.

Meet the Team Thursdays!

Meet David Carroll – Certified Pedorthist

David specializes in the assessment, design, and fitting of custom foot orthotics, as well as the modification and fitting of both orthopaedic and custom footwear. He became a Certified Pedorthist in 2008 after completing an Honours degree in Kinesiology from Lakehead University and a Post-Graduate Diploma from the University of Western Ontario.

David’s dedication to pedorthics and his genuine care for each patient are evident in his daily practice. His clinical expertise and compassionate approach make him an exceptional practitioner and a valued member of our team. His work reflects our shared commitment to delivering the highest level of care and service to every patient.

Outside of the clinic, David enjoys spending time at the rink and the ball field, cheering on his son and supporting his athletic pursuits.

Meet Alex Tempelman - Owner & Certified Orthotist

Alex brings a wealth of expertise and compassion to his role as Owner and Certified Orthotist. He holds a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Guelph and a Master’s in Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics from La Trobe University.

Dedicated to serving Northwestern Ontario, Alex has a clinical focus in neuromuscular bracing, cranial remolding, and limb preservation - with a special emphasis on diabetic orthotic management. His passion for helping others is matched by his commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.

Outside of work, Alex enjoys spending quality time with his wife and three young sons, often adventuring and exploring the outdoors together.

We’re proud to have Alex leading our team with such expertise and dedication.
