On World Water Day we remind our federal Treaty partner that access to clean water is a basic human right.

But in Kashechewan First Nation, a preventable water system failure has forced the evacuation of 2,300 people, leaving families displaced thousands of kilometres from home.

This is not an isolated crisis. Many communities across Nishnawbe Aski Nation have lived under boil-water advisories for decades.

These failures are preventable.

It is vital that the federal government prioritize the introduction of water legislation that sets out standards and commits resources for First Nations water systems.
Having standards in place will help to prevent future critical infrastructure failures, evacuations, and ensure adequate supplies of safe, clean drinking water.

Our communities deserve the same access to safe supplies of life-giving water as any municipality in Canada.

Nibi is life. Nibi is sacred.

Stay home, stay safe, take breaks when shovelling. We are closed today and will reopen tomorrow if conditions allow. 🤍 Let’s be brave and kind to one another… this can’t last forever. (Right?!? 😅)

Maybe the deepest pain
isn’t their absence,
but the love that keeps
looking for them.

It stays trapped in our hands,
in the words we never said,
in the gestures we postponed
because we thought
there would be time.

We wanted to say more,
do more,
hold on a little longer.
But silence
reached us first.

And so we end up speaking into the void,
sending thoughts, kisses, prayers
without really knowing where to send them.
In the end, we learn to trust
that love knows
how to find its own way.

Those we’ve lost
are no longer before our eyes,
but they continue to live
in who we’ve become.

And maybe the bond doesn’t break:
it changes shape.
It becomes memory,
it becomes an invisible presence,
it becomes love
that no longer needs
to be seen to exist.
