Poor posture isn’t the only reason for back and neck pain in people that work at computers all day, but managing your posture day to day can certainly help combat strain. Here are a few postural tips to help keep you pain free.
1) Start with your feet. Place them flat on the floor and spread your feet and knees as wide as you need to so you can achieve a “forward tilt” in your pelvis.
2) By tilting your pelvis forward you are restoring a natural lumbar curve or “lumbar lordosis” this looks like a slight curve forward in the lower back. This is the healthiest position for your discs. Avoid collapsing through this area.
3) take a deep breath, shrug your shoulders to your ears, exhale and draw your shoulder blades together and down your back as if you were tucking them into your back pockets. See how relaxed you can become in this position with the front of your chest open and arms heavy as you type.
4) keep your head aligned with your shoulders, not hunching forward toward your screen. This will reduce strain on the back of your neck, especially the grouchy little muscles at the bottom of your skull that so easily cause tension headaches. Adjust your screen if need be!
5) last but not least, set your phone timer for every hour and get up and move! Any sustained position can cause strain, it’s important to give your body novel input!
