As of October 10, 2025, the Canadian Criminal Code has officially changed the term “child pornography” to “child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM)”.

This shift reflects what experts have long emphasized: these materials are not “pornography” - they are records of child sexual abuse and/or are used in exploitative ways, and the language we use matters.

Updated terminology supports survivor-centred practice, improves clarity in legal and clinical settings, and helps the public better understand the reality and severity of these offences.

A meaningful step forward for protection, accuracy, and child safety.

According to the World Health Organization, millions of children suffer from sexual violence each year.

Today, on the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence, we stand with others to bring attention to the urgent need for action to protect children and end the cycle of abuse.

At Talking for Change, our program supports individuals struggling with sexual thoughts toward children, aiming to prevent abuse before it starts.
