In this month's edition of UHN On the Go:

🏥 UHN remains at the top of Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals list by Research Infosource Inc. This marks the 15th consecutive year UHN has led the rankings, a testament to UHN's commitment to advancing health research.

🍪 TeamUHN celebrated the spirit of the season with our 16th annual Holiday Tea, strengthening connections over cookies, hot chocolate, apple cider, holiday music and merry mingling.

🤝 Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the University of Waterloo's Connector event created new opportunities for students, researchers and clinicians to accelerate innovation in cancer care.

Music is in the air at UHN's Toronto Rehab! 🎶

The TRI Hards, TeamUHN's own band of musicians, led a choir of patients, families and staff through a holiday sing-along. Our voices, along with guitars, ukuleles, glockenspiels and kazoos, brought joy, festive cheer, and a warm sense of healing through the halls.

Music programming and performances are happening across UHN to bring joy to those in our community who may be going through challenging times, and those who are spending the holidays with us. The National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC) just marked 40 years as Canada’s only dedicated eating disorders helpline.

Since it opened in 1985, the NEDIC team has continued transform education and support for Canadians on one of the most lethal and often misunderstood forms of mental illness. Today that work includes:
📞 a toll-free helpline and live chat that supports callers across time zones
📚 a growing number of multi-lingual, downloadable resources
🏫 outreach programs that reach thousands of students, parents and educators each year

A short 100m walk used to be an intimidating challenge for Pauline because of chronic and debilitating pain from a decades-old injury. Although long healed, her brain was still sending faulty signals when there was no longer any real threat.

Things changed when she was referred to UHN's Rehabilitation Pain Service clinic for Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT). The treatment approach combines pain education, physical and psychotherapy to retrain the nervous system. Pauline walked 12,000 steps home after her second session.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women honours the 14 young women murdered during the 1989 École Polytechnique mass shooting in Montreal and demonstrates solidarity with survivors of that tragedy.

This day calls for decisive action against the crisis of gender-based violence and intimate partner violence. Health care professionals play a critical role. Health care workers often serve as the first, and sometimes only, point of contact for women experiencing violence. In addition to providing compassionate care for survivors, health care teams deliver first-line support, conduct medical examinations and treatment, and coordinate referrals to essential services.

The reality remains sobering: in Canada, more than four in ten women experience intimate partner violence during their lives. Collective effort is required to address this crisis and ensure safety and opportunity for women and girls within families and communities.

At UHN, a working community called UHN Women addresses gender-based challenges faced within the organization and advocates for equity across all aspects of work. The goal of UHN Women is to promote equitable and inclusive opportunities for women to lead, grow and achieve professional fulfillment in their careers and lives. It’s Spiritual Care Week!

This week, we’re recognizing the incredible work of Spiritual Care Associates, Practitioners, and Clinician Educators, who remind us that health encompasses the whole person: mind, body, emotions, and the human spirit. From supporting patients and families through moments of spiritual distress to helping clinical teams process the emotional impact of stressful clinical encounters, these professionals make a profound impact.

"It's an honour to be with and help soften the landing for a spectrum of emotions as patients navigate through the complexities of medicine and machines." – Susie Choi, Spiritual Care Practitioner at UHN.

Thank you, Susie, and to all of the spiritual care professionals across UHN!
