Happy Pharmacy Appreciation Month!

Meet Marisa, a Pharmacy Clinician Scientist at UHN. Her journey at UHN began 27 years ago as an inpatient pharmacist in cardiology and internal medicine. Now, Marisa works in the hemodialysis unit where she reviews medications, collaborates with the nephrology team during medical rounds, and ensures external care providers receive up-to-date information. She is also a researcher and provides mentorship to students during clinical practice.

"I became a pharmacist because I like science and problem solving. But more importantly, I really enjoy working with patients," says Marisa. "I think patients like to feel heard and have someone to chat with – it’s important that we take the time to listen and try to help with what’s important to them."

Thank you, Marisa, for all you do to support patients and care teams every day.

Have you noticed something new on the rise at Bathurst and Nassau in Toronto’s west end? 👀

Crews at UHN’s new surgical tower at Toronto Western Hospital have completed the framework of the 5th floor, where neurosurgeons will perform complex brain surgeries. Work is now beginning on the 6th floor, a new base for orthopedic, plastic and hand surgeries.

In total, the 15-storey tower will house 20 advanced operating rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art technologies to perform life-saving surgeries.

March is Music Therapy Awareness Month, and at UHN we’re celebrating the people who use music to bring calm, comfort, and connection to patients when they need it most.

Meet Ella! As a clinical observer shadowing Dr. SarahRose Black in the music therapy program at UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, she’s learning firsthand what it means to support patients throughout their care journeys.

“Being invited into someone’s life through music is extraordinary. Whether it’s helping a patient rest, celebrating a milestone, or supporting a family, music reminds us of the person behind the patient,” says Ella.

Thank you to all certified music therapists for the joy, strength, and support you bring every day.

UHN is taking patient‑centred care beyond vitals and charts, starting with inclusive hair care.

Learn how Dannah, a registered respiratory therapist, is transforming the ICU experience at UHN by strengthening inclusive hair‑care practices. Through UHN's Collaborative Academic Practice (CAP) Innovation Fellowship Program, she created practical resources and hands‑on training to help staff care confidently for all hair types.

More than 40 nurses have already built new skills, and early results show increased comfort in supporting patients with different hair textures and cultural practices.

Did you know that 73% of TeamUHN are women?

On International Women’s Day, we proudly recognize the contributions of women at UHN and across the world. UHN could not be Canada’s Hospital without the dedication and excellence of women working across patient care, research, and education.

While we honour these contributions, we also acknowledge our collective responsibility to create environments where women are empowered, respected, and celebrated – regardless of background or circumstance. UHN Women, one of our working communities, continues to lead this effort by championing equitable and inclusive opportunities that enable women to lead, grow, and achieve professional fulfillment in their careers and lives.

Celebrating International Women’s Day with an open conversation on career development, nonlinear paths, and growing with intention.

Thank you to all of our panelists and to Catherine Wang for an inspiring keynote. Catherine’s journey from TeamUHN to Associate Deputy Minister of Clinical Care and Delivery for Ontario is a reminder that when we invest in one another, we don’t lose impact — we multiply it.

The event also marked an exciting milestone: the unveiling of a new UHNWomen Strategic Action Plan, our roadmap for advancing mentorship, visibility and leadership across the organization.

Here’s to strengthening one another — and strengthening the whole.
