📓Happy Childbirth Education Week!🤰🏽

When it comes to birthing a baby, it's important to go in *informed*. Do your baby and yourself a favour and GET EDUCATED.

Going with the flow and trusting the process have their place, but 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, especially if you want a natural, physiological, intervention- free birth.
Figure out what kind of birth you want and how you'll go about getting it. Take a childbirth education class, but don't rely solely on one offered by a hospital since the modern maternity system does not presently have a great track record when it comes to natural birth 😣 -- so read some books/websites/ blogs/research papers, listen to some podcasts/videos, hire an informative doula who will not only help you learn stuff but also support you, your choices and your partner.

Your baby and you will only get ONE CHANCE at this birth (and it will stay with you both 𝘧𝘰𝘳-𝘦-𝘷𝘦𝘳!). Do your homework and make it a good one! 🤗

🌀 ..What do postpartum doulas DO?? 🤔

-It varies by doula, by family & by day, to be sure; generally, we support mom however she needs it, whether it be actively helping her, minding baby or doing light housework.... THIS doula can often be found:

🔸making mom's breakfast
🔹preparing her special drink (think 'healing Ayurvedic beverage' - to her specifications)
🔸washing dishes
🔹giving mom a foot massage
🔸loading and/or emptying the dishwasher
🔹loading and/or emptying the washing machine and/or dryer or hanging laundry on the clothesline
🔸folding laundry
🔹watering houseplants
🔸bottle-feeding & burping baby or helping mom with breastfeeding & burping
🔹changing baby's diapers or helping mom learn
🔸bathing & dressing baby or helping mom learn
🔹entertaining/reading to/singing to/minding baby while mom looks after herself
🔸soothing & swaying with baby
🔹settling baby to sleep
🔸picking stuff up for mom on my way over
🔹accompanying mom & baby to appointments & on errands
🔸going for a walk with mom and/or baby
🔹providing resources for needs we can't meet
....and more! We can provide that extra pair of skilled hands, be a fount of knowledge, offer and ear and a shoulder for the new mom to lean on.

✴️ WHERE you choose to birth will impact on HOW your birth will go.✴️

That sounds obvious. What do I mean by that?

I mean that it can be very difficult to have a *physiological* (natural) birth in a *medical* (hospital) environment.

👉🏻If you're shooting for a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) in hospital, for example, it will be very difficult - in Toronto, anyway - to avoid having continuous fetal monitoring or an i.v. stuck into your hand, "just in case".

👉🏻If your labour stalls (contractions slow down for a while) - no matter how many babies you've had before or how they were born - you'll be hard-pressed to avoid pitocin (artificial oxytocin) being pushed on you.

(None of these interventions is very conducive to oxytocin flowing freely, btw!)

I'm not trying to pressure anyone into having a home birth if she isn't comfortable with that; it's imperative that a woman give birth where she feels SAFE; I'm just saying that, if you choose to give birth in a hospital, a hospital birth is what you can expect.

(Just sayin'! 🤷🏻‍♀️)

((Pssst : a DOULA can help you navigate these obstacles! -can't necessarily make them go away 100%, but can help mentality prepare you, practice saying 'No',....))

✨ Happy New Year! 🎉
.It's been a light year for me, doula-wise,.. but, then again, I 𝘸𝘢𝘴 building my business, locally, 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩! 🫠

Let's look at my numbers:
🔸𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱: 𝟭.𝟱 (".5?!" >> I only met this mama on her birth day, in the hospital, spent 8hrs with her during induction,.... then missed the birth while I left her to rest! 🤦🏻‍♀️) (that was apparently how it needed to be, though 🤷🏻‍♀️)
🔸𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹, 𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘀: 𝟮 (meds for induction/augmentation only, no epidural nor instrumental assistance)

🏥 Forceps ✂️

Forceps came about because of a desire to save lives.

They were good! They were quite 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 life-savers.

Then.......

Over time, things went a little pear-shaped. 🍐⤵️🫟

The rate of instrumental (forceps + vacuum) births in Canada in 2019 was over 16% -- 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, in one study.

So what?

One analysis found that 1 in 4 forceps-assisted births resulted in physical injury to the mother, never mind the emotional scarring,....

"A VBAC is simply a birth. The most likely outcome of going into spontaneous labour after a previous c-section is the vaginal birth of a healthy baby. ⏱️ What's up with Inductions? 🤔

It seems to me that there is an obsession with getting babies out of their mamas bellies before something terrible happens. Fair enough, don't get me wrong, I don't want anything terrible to happen, either!! ---But what happened to trusting the process? What happened to letting women's bodies and their babies determine when labour should start?

Major points (if you want it word for word, watch the video! 😉):
🔸concern about increased risk of stillbirth
🔸*relative* risk vs *absolute* risk
🔸 inductions & planned caesareans at 39 weeks
🔸by and large: WAY TOO MANY INDUCTIONS & CAESAREANS
🔸 risks of waiting vs risks associated with induction & caesarean birth [𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘙𝘠𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬; 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 𝘸𝘦'𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘯]
🔸labour is *SO* tremendously beneficial for both baby AND mom, even when ends up in caesarean
🔸induced labour processed WAY differently by a woman's body than going into labour spontaneously
🔸due dates: how calculated, how accurate (*or inaccurate!) they can be

Short story long: except in occasional, extenuating circumstances, SPONTANEOUS LABOUR IS THE WAY TO GO, full stop.

Ahhh, the passing of an iconic man. God bless him for all he's done for women, babies, families & birth! Thank you, dear sir. 💜

We are saddened to hear news of the passing of Michel Odent, whose vision and writing reshaped the way we understand human birth.

Michel Odent reminded us that birth is not a medical procedure to be controlled, but a primal rythm to be respected. He advocated for home-like maternity units, warm water births, protecting the birthing woman's privacy and honouring her instincts, undisturbed contact between mother and newborn; he was among the first to discuss the importance of the microbiome, and question many of the practices that had (and have) become normalised in overmedicalised maternity systems globally.

Michel Odent's legacy lives on in every dimmed, quiet birthing room, and in every midwife his words and work inspired to join our profession.

Thank you, Michel, for your passion, vision and committment to women and newborns.
