I'm a Christian birth & postpartum doula now situated in the western suburbs of 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼, 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮, keen to support birthing & new moms Hi! I’m Jenn.

I'm a birth & postpartum doula. I'm passionate about pregnancy, childbirth and child-rearing. My mission is to empower expectant moms to have the labour and childbirth experience they want, and to help families navigate the first precious months of bub's life outside the womb. I will do what I can to help mom own the process of bringing her child into this world, and to have as positive an experience as possible. I have experience with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), home, hospital, water, land and caesarean birth, and lots of practice supporting moms & bubs through the trials and joys of early infancy. I'm also available to be a homebirth doula for older siblings, to be their dedicated buddy throughout the labour & birth. I am a wife and a mother, a daughter, sister, aunt and niece, teacher, artist and friend. Besides all things birth, I love books, thrift shopping, spirituality, puzzles, Zentangle and healthy living. Born & raised in Canada, college-educated & married in the US, I lived in Sydney, Australia for over 12 years and am now located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm eager to support you in your childbearing process!

💠 The NICU.... 💗

Very few parents 𝕖𝕩𝕡𝕖𝕔𝕥 their newborn to need special help after birth.

The NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) is for more than just premies and babies with known issues. Discovering that your newborn does need that special care can catch you off-guard!

This is why it's a good idea to visit your hospital's NICU while you're still pregnant (even if you're planning a homebirth).

It isn't going to 𝕛𝕚𝕟𝕩 you; it will 𝕡𝕣𝕖𝕡𝕒𝕣𝕖 you, give you some 𝕡𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕖 𝕠𝕗 𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕕, should you find yourself there after baby arrives.

No-one wants to 𝕟𝕖𝕖𝕕 it, but we're sure blessed to 𝕙𝕒𝕧𝕖 it, if we do. 💗

🎉 Happy 3rd doula-versary! 😁

I completed my birth & postnatal doula training THREE years ago. This past year - my first in Toronto - I've supported 7 moms ~

🐣 3 birth clients >> all 3 vaginal! (all in hospital, all natural, no forceps or vacuum extractions, no epidurals; laughing gas used by 1) >> 1 was a successful VBAC, woot woot! 😃 (another was technically a VBAC, too - her third! 😁) (client no.3 was a first-time mom🩷)

🐒 4 postpartum clients >> 140 total hours of support

👉🏻 Now I'm currently supporting one birth mama and looking forward to supporting heaps more! 🤗

🎉 She did it! VBAC achieved! 💪🏻

Supporting Nidhi in her birth was such an honour! She'd had a caesarean four years prior and, determined to have a vaginal next birth, she did the work: she educated herself, got pelvic floor support, ate healthfully, hired a doula, did the uncomfortable Miles circuit and laboured at home for as long as possible. Her unsolicited feedback:

"First of all I want to tell you that I am extremely grateful and thankful to you, Jenn. You are a god-send. You made my birthing journey so memorable and powerful. You were OUR rock, mentally and physically (for me), although my eyes were closed during most of the time, your warm hand strokes were my peace in the chaos. You made it easier to journey through unfamiliar landscape. If it weren’t for you, I would have ended up with another c-section. You made my VBAC not just possible but memorable. 📓Happy Childbirth Education Week!🤰🏽

When it comes to birthing a baby, it's important to go in *informed*. Do your baby and yourself a favour and GET EDUCATED.

Going with the flow and trusting the process have their place, but 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, especially if you want a natural, physiological, intervention- free birth.
Figure out what kind of birth you want and how you'll go about getting it. Take a childbirth education class, but don't rely solely on one offered by a hospital since the modern maternity system does not presently have a great track record when it comes to natural birth 😣 -- so read some books/websites/ blogs/research papers, listen to some podcasts/videos, hire an informative doula who will not only help you learn stuff but also support you, your choices and your partner.

Your baby and you will only get ONE CHANCE at this birth (and it will stay with you both 𝘧𝘰𝘳-𝘦-𝘷𝘦𝘳!). Do your homework and make it a good one! 🤗

🌀 ..What do postpartum doulas DO?? 🤔

-It varies by doula, by family & by day, to be sure; generally, we support mom however she needs it, whether it be actively helping her, minding baby or doing light housework.... THIS doula can often be found:

🔸making mom's breakfast
🔹preparing her special drink (think 'healing Ayurvedic beverage' - to her specifications)
🔸washing dishes
🔹giving mom a foot massage
🔸loading and/or emptying the dishwasher
🔹loading and/or emptying the washing machine and/or dryer or hanging laundry on the clothesline
🔸folding laundry
🔹watering houseplants
🔸bottle-feeding & burping baby or helping mom with breastfeeding & burping
🔹changing baby's diapers or helping mom learn
🔸bathing & dressing baby or helping mom learn
🔹entertaining/reading to/singing to/minding baby while mom looks after herself
🔸soothing & swaying with baby
🔹settling baby to sleep
🔸picking stuff up for mom on my way over
🔹accompanying mom & baby to appointments & on errands
🔸going for a walk with mom and/or baby
🔹providing resources for needs we can't meet
....and more! We can provide that extra pair of skilled hands, be a fount of knowledge, offer and ear and a shoulder for the new mom to lean on.

✴️ WHERE you choose to birth will impact on HOW your birth will go.✴️

That sounds obvious. What do I mean by that?

I mean that it can be very difficult to have a *physiological* (natural) birth in a *medical* (hospital) environment.

👉🏻If you're shooting for a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) in hospital, for example, it will be very difficult - in Toronto, anyway - to avoid having continuous fetal monitoring or an i.v. stuck into your hand, "just in case".

👉🏻If your labour stalls (contractions slow down for a while) - no matter how many babies you've had before or how they were born - you'll be hard-pressed to avoid pitocin (artificial oxytocin) being pushed on you.

(None of these interventions is very conducive to oxytocin flowing freely, btw!)

I'm not trying to pressure anyone into having a home birth if she isn't comfortable with that; it's imperative that a woman give birth where she feels SAFE; I'm just saying that, if you choose to give birth in a hospital, a hospital birth is what you can expect.

(Just sayin'! 🤷🏻‍♀️)

((Pssst : a DOULA can help you navigate these obstacles! -can't necessarily make them go away 100%, but can help mentality prepare you, practice saying 'No',....))

✨ Happy New Year! 🎉
.It's been a light year for me, doula-wise,.. but, then again, I 𝘸𝘢𝘴 building my business, locally, 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩! 🫠

Let's look at my numbers:
🔸𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱: 𝟭.𝟱 (".5?!" >> I only met this mama on her birth day, in the hospital, spent 8hrs with her during induction,.... then missed the birth while I left her to rest! 🤦🏻‍♀️) (that was apparently how it needed to be, though 🤷🏻‍♀️)
🔸𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹, 𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘀: 𝟮 (meds for induction/augmentation only, no epidural nor instrumental assistance)
