๐ŸŒธ It's testimonial time! Here are one lovely mom's words.... ๐ŸŒธ

"I was privileged to have Jenn as my doula in 2023. She came into my life at a time when I was very vulnerable, had little to no support, and was navigating pregnancy on my own.

Having Jenn by my side made all the difference. From our prenatal sessions through to labour and postpartum care, she provided a calm, steady, and deeply compassionate presence that I will always be grateful for.

Jenn shared valuable knowledge and education around our rights during pregnancy and birth โ€” things I otherwise wouldnโ€™t have known. She advocated strongly for me and was a true rock during that time.

She created a safe and supportive environment throughout my birth, helping me feel guided, reassured, and empowered every step of the way. Her care didnโ€™t stop there โ€” she continued to check in and support me afterwards in ways that meant so much.

What truly sets Jenn apart is the genuine thought and care she puts into every detail. She created beautiful keepsakes for me, including a written account of my birth that I will treasure forever, along with meaningful personal touches that made the experience even more special.

Her support went far beyond what I expected, and I will always appreciate the role she played during such an important time in my life. I am incredibly grateful for her care and would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone seeking a compassionate and dedicated doula."

๐ŸŒฟ Want a NATURAL, vaginal birth? Here's what I want you to do....๐ŸŒฟ [I'll bet you won't guess!?]

It may sound counter-intuitive, but recommend that you

"What?! I haven't had any babies yet, and I want a vaginal birth, not a c-section -- isn't that going to SET ME UP to have a caesarean?!"

No! This way you can hear moms talk about how things went south for them, what they wish they'd done differently or what they will do differently for their next birth. ๐Ÿ’œ

A massive reason WHY so many women end up having caesareans, even when they'd wanted a vaginal birth, is because they They trusted the system too much, unfortunately.๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Don't get me wrong, sometimes birth just does go pear-shaped ๐Ÿ even when we've done all the things!
In those instances, when circumstances require it, we're blessed to have surgical teams at the ready to help us out of what could be a dire situation.

When we go into birth BLITHELY, sort of.. carelessly, we're more likely to agree to procedures that aren't actually necessary, which can lead to the '๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€' -- which, all too often, ends in caesareans.๐Ÿ˜ฃ

๐Ÿ“ป There are heaps of VBAC resources out there -- whole podcasts dedicated to birth after caesarean + episodes from well-rounded birth poddies with episodes on birth after caesarean ( ....)

Take advantage of these resources & listen to what those mamas have to say, so that you, hopefully, can learn from THEIR mistakes. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

โœจ Caesarean misconception nยฐ 2โœŒ๐Ÿป โœจ

"Women who give birth by caesarean ONCE are bound to giving birth by caesarean FOREVER". In other words, "Once a caesarean, always a caesarean".

It was believed that women who gave birth by caesarean needed to every time, because it was too dangerous for their scarred uteruses to experience the rigours of labour or because her body was somehow 'flawed', it had failed her last time and therefore would never be able to give birth vaginally.

It's technically true that a caesarean scar could split open, but that's very, VERY rare; it's true that it could start to split a little bit, but that's also REALLY rare -- less than 1%! ๐Ÿ”Ž Let's look at that in context: if there's even a 1% chance of the scar rupturing, that still means that there's a 99% chance that it WON'T!!

Even if it does start to split, the woman will know that something isn't right: this is where medical intervention CAN be a Godsend.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

As for mothers' bodies being 'broken' or incapable of birthing her babies, that's just hogwash! ๐Ÿ™„

In rare instances, when there are congenital defects or if she's been in an accident and broken her pelvis, there are times when a woman's body isn't able to birth her baby vaginally, but those situations are REALLY RARE.

So if you're pregnant and looking forward to your FIRST birth or your NEXT birth after a caesarean, remember that these misconceptions are MISCONCEPTIONS --- you *CAN* birth your baby vaginally, if you really want to and you put in the work!๐Ÿค—

((and psst: hire a doula! ๐Ÿ˜‰))

โœจ Caesarean misconception nยฐ 1 โ˜๐Ÿปโœจ

"All emergency caesareans are unavoidable"

Not ALL caesareans are unavoidable -- there is definitely a time & place for medical intervention, and we're deeply blessed to have the technology & skilled professionals to step in when it is truly necessary in order to avoid catastrophe to the mother or baby.

Many caesareans, although dubbed 'emergency', are NOT true emergencies and could have been avoided. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

What *is* the 'emergency' is the state of the western world's maternity system, by and large ๐Ÿ˜ž and how it treats labouring women, bullying them into speeding up their labours for no good reason.

๐ŸŒ€ When a labour is left to BEGIN on its own and PROGRESS at its own natural pace, a healthy vaginal birth is usually the result!

๐ŸŒ€ When women are left in freedom to labour however they want to, in whatever position they want to, labour progresses more smoothly and babies come out more easily than when moms are expected to stay on their backs in bed.

Women themselves also have a part to play in this, in that they help their situation very much by keeping HEALTHY LIFESTYLES: eating healthfully, drinking plenty of water, moving lots.

We do ourselves a disfavour when we eat lots of processed foods, drink lots of processed beverages and assume sedentary lifestyles (i.e. when we sit around a lot!).

If we want low-intervention births we also need to accept that contractions hurt! pushing a baby out hurts! giving birth through our vaginas hurts!! ----and *WE CAN DO IT*!!

Except in rare circumstances, the Lord does not give us babies that are too big for our bodies - He made us to grow & nurture & birth our babies. ๐Ÿ’—

When we stop taking the "I-don't-want-to-feel -the-pain" escape route, we'll be better poised to have more straightforward births.

I'll say it again, there ARE times when medical and surgical intervention are necessary and a true Godsend..... but it isn't as often as you might think.

โœจ April is Caesarean Awareness Month โœจ
...and in honour of that I want to address two common misconceptions about caesarean sections:

โ˜๐Ÿป All emergency caesareans are UNAVOIDABLE. "Oh, thank goodness you were in the hospital because they were able to rescue you with a caesarean birth!"

>> We truly are blessed to have the technology to resolve truly complicated birth situations, but NOT ALL 'emergency' caesareans are performed because of true, unavoidable medical emergencies.

โœŒ๐Ÿป Women who give birth by caesarean ONCE are bound to birth ALL future children by caesarean. "Once a caesarean, always a caesarean."

>> Some moms believe - and some doctors teach - that a woman is required to give birth to all of her subsequent babies by caesarean once she's had one by caesarean.๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

THESE TWO MISCONCEPTIONS ARE NOT TRUE!
((..that's why they're *misconceptions*!..))

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปCome back to learn more about these two false notions. All shall be revealed. ๐Ÿ˜

Are you scared about labour & birth?
Do you worry that you won't be able to do it, or that your body is going to fail you?

YOU CAN TOTALLY DO THIS!!

You don't need a medical professional to tell you whether you're in labour or if your body is ready to birth your baby.

YOU know.
Your BODY knows.
Your body will TELL you!

๐Ÿ’ Birth is like MARRIAGE?? ๐Ÿค”

Birth isn't just about one day. Kind of like marriage, which isn't just about the wedding day, birth isn't just "Baby's born, now let's get on with the rest of life!"

How a pregnancy goes, how a labour & birth go, stays with the child FOREVER. ๐Ÿ’—

A baby is synched with its mom throughout pregnancy - heart rates fluctuate in tandem, hormones fluctuate in tandem; labour {when it's allowed to ๐Ÿ™„} naturally begins when both Baby's and Mama's bodies are ready; struggles experienced during labour & birth are felt by the baby and remembered -- maybe not intrinsically in Baby's mind, but by Baby's body.
.That being said, pregnancy, labour & birth will go how they need to go; there are no coincidences.

*THAT* being said, what a gift it is to your baby, to yourself and to the world at large to INVEST in the process! Do your homework, figure out what kind of birth you want to have and work towards making that a reality.

I would love for every childbearing woman to be able to go into her labour & birth innately confident and able to trust in her birth team and in the process & outcome.

Sadly, it isn't that simple: birth, these days, is generally viewed as a scary event, so women often go into it scared! And maternity services.. aren't always reliably woman-centric โš•๏ธ making the process & outcome less certain and more likely to concern a woman than in an ideal world.

If you're pregnant, I encourage you to grab this bull by the horns ๐Ÿ‚ and TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR BIRTH. We aren't ultimately in control of our lives, but we still need to do our parts and put the effort in, in order to increase our chances of having a good outcome.

You wouldn't go into outer space without preparing yourself ahead of time, you wouldn't have a flight crew or ground control team who doubted that you could do it, so don't leave your birth to chance, either!

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Educate yourself, decide how YOU want to do it, line up a birth team that you jive with and trust, and just maybe hire yourself a doula to help launch this next chapter of your lives. ๐Ÿค—
