Have you heard of the DUTCH test? 🔍

I am a big believer in the phrase “test, don’t guess”. DUTCH stands for dried urine test for comprehensive hormones. This is a urine test collected at-home over a 24 hour period which measures 35 different markers to assess hormone production and metabolism.

The DUTCH tests looks at the hormones estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, and DHEA-S, plus their metabolites, liver detoxification, inflammation, melatonin, dopamine, B vitamins and more!

This test helps practitioners create an individualized treatment plan by identifying the exact hormones or hormone pathways that need support.

You should consider the DUTCH test if you have acne, PMS, period problems, hair loss, weight gain, fatigue, infertility, or any other symptoms of hormonal imbalance.

Have you ever tried the DUTCH test? 🙌🏼

Chronic stress can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from poor sleep and fatigue to mood changes like anxiety and depression. After the year and half we’ve had, it’s safe to say we could all use some adrenal support. Here’s how to do it:

✨Focus on balancing your blood sugar through diet. Eat frequent meals consisting of a healthy fat, protein, and carb (the fat + protein will prevent spikes in blood sugar).

✨Swap high-intensity workouts for low-intensity ones like yoga, pilates, and/or walking. HIIT workouts are great for some, but can actually worsen stress/cortisol levels in others when overdone.

✨Incorporate stress management practices into your daily routine. This can mean journalling, meditation, walking, or anything that makes you feel calm.

Nothing says fall like a burning a candle. 🍂

This season, stick to non-toxic candles by avoiding these ingredients:

1) Fragrances. These consist of endocrine disrupting chemicals such as phthalates. For a cleaner smell, look for candles scented with essential oils.

2) Paraffin Wax. This is derived from petroleum, which releases carcinogenic soot. Instead, opt for candles made of soy, beeswax, or coconut wax.

3) Metal Wicks. Some wicks will have a metal core for stability, however, this can emit heavy metals into the air. To make sure there is no metal, look on the label for 100% cotton, h**p, or wood wicks.

Use these tips to support your immune system this fall! 🍂

🥗 Healthy diet. Focus on fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean sources of protein. Bonus* immune boosting foods include garlic, ginger, fermented foods, and bell peppers!

💪🏻Regular exercise. Make sure to have daily movement, whether its a short walk around the block or an hour workout class.

🧘🏻‍♀️Meditate. Stress can suppress the immune system so finding ways to decrease stress is important. Taking 5 minutes a day to meditate can help shift into your parasympathetic nervous system.

💤Sleep. Aim for 8 hours a night to strengthen your immune system!

Do you eat seafood? 🍣

Seafood provides an excellent source of protein and healthy-fats.

However, not all seafood is safe for regular consumption. Some fish like swordfish and tuna are contaminated with mercury, PCBs, dioxins, and pesticides. 🙅🏻‍♀️

If you want to enjoy the benefits of seafood without potential toxin exposure, stick to SMASH fish. This stands for Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, and Herring. These smaller fish have lower levels of mercury and other contaminants, while having higher omega-3 fatty acids. ✔️

CLEAN DRINKS 🌱

Most sport drinks, sodas, and juices contain unnecessary added sugars, artificial colouring and flavouring. Always read your labels to swap out these beverages for healthier alternatives.

✅Coconut water like Thirsty Buddha provides natural electrolytes without added ingredients.

✅Gingerade kombucha has fresh pressed ginger juice AND a source of probiotics (FYI Ginger Ale doesn’t even contain real ginger 🤔).

✅Adding fresh or frozen fruit to your water will provide flavour and a source of vitamins and minerals.

Do these symptoms found familiar? 🧐

If you have any of these symptoms, you might have SIBO or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. This is a digestive disorder caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the small intestine.

To treat, I like to use this gut protocol called the 5Rs:

1) Remove triggering foods and pathogens causing the SIBO through anti-microbial herbs such as berberine.
2) Replace digestive secretions with digestive enzymes, HCL, bile, etc.
3) Reinoculate the gut microbiome with the good bacteria from probiotic-rich foods or supplements.
4) Repair the GI tract with essential nutrients such as glutamine, zinc, antioxidants, and omega-3s.
5)Rebalance lifestyle habits by optimizing sleep, exercise, stress management.

This treatment plan looks a little different with each individual case so if you have any of the above symptoms, work with a naturopathic doctor to get your gut back on track. ✔️

Simple and easy tips to reduce your toxic burden 🙅🏻‍♀️🏡

1. Avoid plastics. Plastics contain endocrine disrupting chemicals including BPA, phthalates, and PFAS. If you are currently using plastic water bottles, switch to glass or stainless steel.

2. Use the or EWG Healthy Living app for personal care products. Search or scan a product using this database for a 1-10 hazard rating based on ingredients. Avoid regular use of products that have a high hazard rating.

3. Choose organic produce when possible. This will help reduce exposure to pesticides and insecticides. Swipe right for the EWG “dirty dozen list” of produce that contains the most pesticide residue.

4. Opt for ‘fragrance-free’ products. Fragrance is an umbrella term for thousands of different ingredients, including endocrine disrupting chemicals. Focus on products you use the most (laundry detergent, hand soaps, cleaners, etc.).
