It's an exciting time in Canada for those of us that want to improve accessibility. The Accessible Canada Act was passed in 2019 and since then, there have been a number of committees that have been working on developing new standards to improve accessibility. One of these standards focuses on improving the accessibility of outdoor spaces which include our national parks.

We know that there are a lot of you out there who are interested in making our national parks more accessible and so we wanted to find a way to bring us all together to talk about it, to learn from each other and to create a set of recommendations that we can pass on to the organizations that are creating these standards.

So we are holding a free, 3-day virtual conference in August.
We would really like it if you would join us! If you are interested in this topic and can think of ways that we can make our national parks more accessible whether you are someone or know someone with a sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, or physical impairment we want to understand the types of problems that might prevent someone from wanting to make the trip to a national park in the first place as well as think about all of the different accommodations that we can think of to help more people take part in more of the activities that are offered at our national parks.

We hope to see you there!

He is a brown-skinned man with short dark hair, a mustache, and a beard. He is wearing dark-rimmed glasses and a white dress shirt.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). Our director Dr. Tilak Dutta had a great chat with Juan Olarte about his work to make digital information (websites and documents) more accessible as well as what National Park Accessibility means to him. Near the end he highlights an event he will be hosting to mark this important day including a keynote talk from the co-founder of GAAD, Jennison Asuncion.

Here's the link to the chat between TIlak and Juan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoX5kWWCzFo
