We can all experience inflammation at certain times for different reasons. The inflammatory response is a natural response the body does to protect itself from acute situations like a fever, infection or injury. To explain it very simply, inflammation is basically pain, redness, swelling and heat either externally or internally. When inflammation becomes chronic for myriad reasons there are deeper things causing it and fuelling it.
Chronic inflammation can come from several things such as the food we eat, unresolved trauma, stress, not sleeping well, lack of exercise and movement and more. Chronic inflammation can develop into many diseases and conditions over time if we don’t address the root cause and work to resolve it.
Diet and nutrition, sleep and exercise can greatly improve the body’s inflammatory response. If you’re tired of going in circles working with a certified Functional Nutrition Counsellor (like myself) can make your journey to optimal health easier and quicker.

Our bodies have the magnificent ability and capacity to heal themselves from health issues/disease but they need total cooperation with our actions and mindset. It’s not always easy, it can take time and we may stumble at times but if we don’t give up and choose to keep going with determination wonderful things will happen! You can do hard things….Consistency is key 💯💛

We are not just what we eat. We are what our body can do with what we eat.

😕When our body is not functioning optimally and experiencing a chronic condition or disease and symptoms it’s not so easy to do what it should do with the food we eat or even the supplements we are taking.

🤩 This is how functional medicine nutrition can make all the difference in the healing journey.
Addressing the soil in which the roots of disease and conditions are living in is most important to improve health, achieve healing and stop the frustrating, seemingly never ending circle that holds us back from moving forward towards optimal health.

🌻☀️Once we address the terrain and soil, take out any weeds, nourish and replenish it healing can happen. We cannot heal in the same environment we got sick in. 💛✌🏻

Making mindful choices are easier when we ask ourselves if we’re ok with what we’re about to eat becoming a part of us and our body for a long time.

🌱Herbs and spices that speak to your genes.

Anise . Basil . Black Pepper . Caraway
Cardamom . Chili Pepper . Cinnamon
Clove . Coriander . Cumin . Fennel
Fennugreek . Flaxseed. Garlic . Ginger
Holy Basil . Lemongrass . Licorice
Mint . Mustard Seed . Nutmeg . Oregano
Parsley . Rosemary . Saffron . Tamarind
Turmeric

🧄Try adding more of these to your meals. Change things up and try new flavours!
They can really help get us out of the rut of eating the same things over and over again.
Which leads to boredom, which can lead to poor food choices.

🌱Herbs and spices can speak to or send messages to your genes and cells. Herbs and spices can also help satiety, stimulate digestion, help to strengthen the immune system, help to reduce inflammation, promote a heathy inflammatory response and some hold anti viral and anti bacterial properties and pre biotic fibre to help foster a better microbiome. Herbs and spices are good for gut health.

🪴You can even give it go and grow some of your own. Planting season is fast approaching and I can’t wait to get my herb garden growing!

😋 Do you add herbs and spices to your food? Which ones are your favourites?

With the rising cost of produce here’s a tip to keep it fresher longer, saving you 💰. Produce emits gas when it’s stored or sitting at certain temps and humidity levels. These gases can cause certain produce it’s close to to ripen and rot much sooner.

What we eat and drink affects so many aspects of our life and health. It really is the most important part of our journey and whether it’s a smooth or bumpy one and we can use food as medicine to help.
There’s so much talk about gut health recently and since most health issues can be linked back to gut health I could talk for days about how the gut gets compromised and why it’s important to do what we can to enhance our microbiome. There’s also so many things we can do lifestyle wise and supplements we can take that can help repair and restore damage and imbalance or dysbiosis. But there are also many foods that we can incorporate into our diets to help foster, grow, and maintain a good and healthy microbiome in our gut.
Here’s a couple of simple hacks that anyone can try and that your taste buds will love. 😋
👄Did you know that chewing all in itself can help improve gut health? Taking time to chew and enjoy the flavours will cause more saliva to form and helps to release a growth factor into the saliva which will help to stabilize increased permeability (leaky gut) especially in the small intestine. Pretty cool eh? Life is so busy and sometimes it’s hard to actually sit, relax and take our time eating. We horf and gobble when we are short on time. But just taking an extra few minutes to slow down and chew more can help improve gut health. It will also help break down the food better so digestion and absorption of nutrients is much more efficient and will also help the body to pull more nutrients out of the food. This can give us more energy as well!
Hack #2 is delicious. 🍎🍏
Pectin can help the gut heal. Pectin is found in apples and in some other fruits like plums and citrus fruits. Green apples can contain more pectin. It can be a powerful agent in repairing the mucosa in the gut. It provides a sub straight for good bacteria to metabolize which will then facilitate a series of receptors inside the GI tract to then promote different kinds of defensive molecules and to facilitate the utilization of stem cell production so that those cells can replicate more quickly. These cells repair damage to the gut lining and calm inflammation. When you calm inflammation healing can take place.
Here is the tasty part 🍏🍎 Take a preferably organic apple, wash it well, peel some of it but not all or leave the peel in tact. Be sure to leave a little skin on it and cut it open or you can leave it whole. I cut out some of the core so I can add ingredients but try to leave some in there as most of the pectin is in the core. Splash a little water in the bottom of the dish so the apple doesn’t burn and so some steam will be created. I add a little coconut butter inside each apple but it’s optional. Coconut oil is good for the gut as well. Put it in a 375 deg. oven until soft. I usually start checking it with a fork or knife at about 30 -45 minutes.
Sprinkle a Tsp of cinnamon over it. You can add it before putting it in the oven . I also like to add a tiny bit of cinnamon bark essential oil to the water at the bottom (optional). I dip a toothpick in the top to coat it and swirl it around. I do this because the essential oil is very powerful and a tiny bit is enough. I don’t want to overpower the apple.
Cinnamon is so amazing and cinnamon and apples are like comfort food. 😋 It contains cinnamaldehyde that is good at calming down acute inflammation in the gut. It can also help with blood sugar balance. The two together are a great team!
Your home will smell amazing as well and that can help stir up more saliva with those digestive enzymes, growth factor and HCL (hydrochloride acid) in the stomach.

Make a few at a time and you can even try adding a spoon of unsweetened almond butter in it before serving 😋 Almonds are great for the gut too and makes this a very satisfying snack. Store in the fridge whatever you don’t eat up.
You can eat this everyday and think about the good it’s doing your gut. 🍎🍏 Enjoy!
