Physicians in Ontario and across Canada are struggling. Long work hours, high caseloads, and the significant emotional toll of caring for hundreds or thousands of patients' lives can lead to significant emotional strain on MDs.

The reality is that systemic factors outside the control of individual physicians play a notable role in these struggles, particularly throughout residency years. Limited control over scheduling, intense demand for services, an increasing administrative burden, and frustrating compensation models contribute to physician mental health issues. And yet there are still things that physicians can do to improve their mental health, both at individual and systemic levels.

Read our latest blog post about the ways in which physicians are struggling and possibilities for the ways in which they can improve their mental health.

Physicians perform an essential function in society and work under enormous pressures in doing so. As a result, they experience high levels of mental health issues, including burnout, anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Here’s an introduction to how physicians can take care of themselves and imp...

"Boys’ and men’s ill mental health represents a significant burden across Canada and improving boys’ and men’s mental health (and everyone else’s by extension) requires an emphasis on the social determinants of health.

This means viewing health behaviours and outcomes as deeply linked with ‘social’ issues like: education; income and employment security; affordable and stable housing; food security; social inclusion; and access to quality health care."

Men taking care of their mental health is an act of strength and a society that supports this becomes healthier and safer for us all.

Men are socialized to believe there's a 'right' way to be a man. These narrow definitions of masculinity are incredibly unhelpful and limiting, both for men and those around us. Let's continue to work to broaden how we understand masculinity and what it means to be a man.

I'm honoured that today's picked up my oped on this topic, which focuses on rigid definitions of masculinity and the ways in which these affect men's (and others') mental health.

We all find ourselves caught up ruminating about the past and worrying about the future sometimes!

When these habitual thinking patterns become unhelpful, remind yourself to come back home to the present moment, using whatever activity you're doing as an anchor to do so.

Ask yourself the simple question, 'What am I doing right now?' to practice coming back. This will help disrupt habitual thinking and increase our connection with what's right in front of us!
