February 8-14 is Sexual Health Week, and this year the campaign is focusing in on the risks of AI.
When it comes to sexual health, it can feel like you're the only one dealing with it, and that isolating feeling creates shame and embarrassment.
So, people turn to AI; anonymous, private, and full of information, it seems like the perfect solution to avoiding those tough feelings.
But there are risks-
❌ Misinformation:
AI is pulling from a lot of sources, but quantity =/= quality. Information is often sourced from non-scientific articles, opinion pieces, posts on forums or poorly backed studies.
❌ Misdiagnosis:
With so much conflicting information its easy for a chat bot to find a way for your symptoms to align with many disorders, causing unnecessary worry.
❌ DIY Care Gone Wrong:
What happens when care starts off with a misdiagnosis and poor quality information? Suddenly you are cutting out valuable foods from your diet, taking unsafe doses of potent herbs, or changing around your schedule. Overall adding more stress to your life.
Sexual health shouldn't hide away in the computer!
So what can we do?
🙌 Remind yourself there is no reason to feel shame, everyone has to come face to face with sexual health at some point, whether its during puberty, child-rearing, menopause or adult-life hormonal changes.
😌 Sharing with health care professionals and inviting peers to do the same can help us understand how normal shifts from person to person. Not to measure yourself against others, but to see how "healthy" holds multitudes.
✨ Finding a trusted practitioner can help shame melt away, while you find explanations and treatments that makes sense for you!
AT TLC Medicine we use a holistic view for acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Sexual health is connected to your overall health and isn't a separate taboo topic. We work to ensure your comfort and provide informed treatment.
