October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

My heart was heavy writing this. Being in the fertility and birth world for years, I’ve now had my fair share of helping people through chemical pregnancies, miscarriage and recently was present for a late-term pregnancy loss.

For anyone who has been or is going through this; you are seen, and your grief is shared. We remember your angel baby and encourage you to do so as well in any way that is significant to you.

For anyone who is helping someone through this, know that your presence means the world to them. We may not know what to say but saying anything at all and remembering their baby is so important.

I once had a patient tell me that they want to keep talking about their loss because talking about their baby and using his name is the only world that their baby will live in. That stuck with me.

It’s truly been the most heart-breaking honour to be with you through these transitional times in life. A huge should out to my teams at and for doing the work that you do. You are so needed 🤍🤍🤍

Sending love and healing,
Dr. Arlene Dubier

Although hemoglobin is the marker for iron deficiency anemia, low-end ferritin can be a sign of iron deficiency beginning to occur

Ferritin below 30 ng/mL will require additional supplementation or intake of iron

Keep in mind that your prenatal vitamin does not have enough elemental iron to boost your stores!

The one caveat is that ferritin may be falsely elevated in cases of acute infection or underlying inflammation 🔥

What are the risks of iron deficiency in pregnant people?
-Greater risks for safety of the pregnant person
-Increased risk of pre-term delivery
-Low birth weight
-Higher risk of anxiety and depression in children

Please work with your healthcare provider to determine if and how much additional iron supplementation is required

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affected about 5.5% of pregnancies in Canada in 2010/2011.

Along with gestational high blood pressure, it is one of the most commonly diagnosed pregnancy concerns.

This diagnosis can be alarming for some people, as high blood sugar can carry it’s risks for baby and the person giving birth.

Swipe right to see three basic guidelines for GDM support.

Lower glycemic index foods include non-starchy vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, Greek yogurt, etc. 🥑🥦🥜

On top of this, individualized nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle support is important to lower risks associated with GDM.

ADAPTOGENS✨

These are herbs which increase our ability to handle mental, emotional and physical stressors. Depending on the adaptogen you use, they and increase energy or help to ground you.

Ashwagandha has definitely been featured on my grid before as a favourite adaptogen for both the Yin and Yang. In other words, a very balancing herb.

It is also a go-to for postpartum support and is safe to use in breast(chest)-feeding parents 🤱

Ask your practitioner if this is a good choice for you, as herb and drug interactions are important to note!

This is a very bare-bones way of looking at how to eat to decrease risk of endometriosis.

It’s clear that increasing antioxidants in your diet can reduce severity of endo. 🥦🍎🍊🫑🥕

Replacing trans and saturated fats (ex. red meat, processed foods) with polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, nuts and seeds can also reduce risk of endometriosis 🥑🥜

Interesting enough, dairy is protective! The only exception to this rule is butter, which is high in saturated fat.

Save this post, or share it with a friend who you know has endometriosis or a family history of endo

Please speak with your health care practitioner to decide what is best for you before changing styles of eating!

There is so much naturopathic medicine can do to help folks with endometriosis, ESPECIALLY if fertility is a future goal. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like a consultation.

Check out my recent blog post about the top 3 causes of ni**le pain when breastfeeding. It may or may not be what you think.

I'd love to hear any comments or questions you have :)

With breastfeeding, it is common to feel tugging, pulling or some degree of suction. Pain is not normal.

You don’t have to feel like this every month.

If you experience symptoms about a week before your period which disappear or improve once you begin your period, this could be PMS or PMDD.

Symptoms can include:
-Rapidly changing mood or increased sensitivity to rejection
-Intense irritability, or increased interpersonal conflict
-Intense feelings of being low or having self-deprecating thoughts
-Anxiety
-Fatigue
-Changes in appetite: over or under-eating
-Over or under-sleeping
-Difficulty concentrating
-Physical symptoms: Feeling heavy, breast tenderness

If these symptoms are impacting your quality of life, day to day activities and relationships with others, this could be a reason to seek out help.

I always ask my patients to track these symptoms for at least 2 cycles. You can do this via searching online for a detailed period or PMDD symptom tracker, or asking your healthcare provider for a template they work with.

What you are experiencing is SO valid. Please reach out if you need have any questions or need help feeling your best all month long.

My mission

My goal as a practitioner is to advocate for my patients to prioritize their health.

It is important to meet someone where they are physically, emotionally, and mentally. With that, we can make small positive changes that fit your lifestyle and contribute to both treatment and future prevention of health concerns.
