Psoriasis is a disorder of the immune system that causes skin rashes with itchy, scaly patches that can be painful and embarrassing. Psoriasis can impact a person’s relationships, self-esteem, and even their work.
Read more about this disease, which affects as many as three percent of Canadians: https://www.canadianpsoriasisnetwork.com/psoriasis-have/

There’s no cure for psoriasis, but there are a variety of treatment options, including prescription creams, ointments, and oral or injectable medications.

Ask our pharmacist if you have any questions about your treatment medications, or if you suspect you may have psoriasis.

Osteoporosis is a disease of low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which may lead to an increased risk of fracture. This disease can have multiple causes, but exercise and nutrition play a role in keeping bones healthy.

Foods for healthy bones… Adequate calcium intake is necessary for maintaining bone health. Key sources of calcium include milk, fortified milk alternatives, and canned salmon.

Exercise for healthy bones… An active lifestyle helps protect your spine, builds muscle strength and balance, and slows the rate of bone loss. A combination of activities, including yoga, dance, walking and weight training, for example, will help to protect your bones.

Talk with our pharmacist for advice on whether you should be taking a calcium supplement, and other ways you can protect your bones

Today is National Pharmacy Technicians Day!

They greet you at the counter, answer your questions about your prescriptions, and so much more.

Depending on where you live across the country, there are a variety of ways that pharmacy technicians assist patients. They can receive prescriptions, provide instructions on using devices such as blood glucose meters, compound drugs, and in some provinces, give certain vaccines.

All of us on the pharmacy team want to take this time to thank our pharmacy technicians – you are an invaluable part of our team!

Keep your little ones safe this Halloween – and have fun on the spookiest night of the year by planning ahead and following a few golden rules:
• Give each child a flashlight to carry to make them more visible to cars and other pedestrians and encourage them to always cross at the corner.
• Let kids draw or design the jack-o-lantern, then have an adult carve it.
• Choose costumes that are fitted (which don’t pose a tripping hazard) and use makeup instead of masks, so they don’t interfere with your child’s vision or breathing.

How about an omelet or a frittata for dinner tonight? Eggs are a healthy source of low-calorie, high-quality protein, vitamins B and D, and several key minerals. They do you good, and taste great, too.

Canada’s Food Guide encourages Canadians to cook at home more often, enjoy meals with friends and family, and include whole, unprocessed, and vitamin-rich foods, like eggs. Eating vegan? No problem. How about a plant-based tofu scramble instead?

Before you start a new prescription, or anytime you have a query, be sure to check in with our pharmacy team. Not sure what to ask? Here’s a great question: “How should I use this medication?”

Our pharmacist can review the best time of day to take the medication – and if it needs to be taken at the same time daily. They’ll confirm if it can cause drowsiness, which would prohibit you from driving your car while you’re taking it. The pharmacist will also let you know if it should be taken with or without food, and anything else of which you should be aware.

You wake up in the middle of the night with chills, even though you’re buried in your duvet. Or, your child is crying, with a forehead that’s hot to the touch. All signs point to fever, but you’ll need to get out your thermometer to confirm.

A fever is a temporary rise in body temperature (anything over 37.6°C or 99.7°F) designed to fight off infection. Depending on the style of thermometer, you can take someone’s temperature in the ear, under the tongue, or in the armpit.

Ask our pharmacist about the correct dosing for fever-reducing medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, to help keep you or your family comfortable until the fever passes.
