Can Physiotherapists perform Acupuncture in their Treatments?

Acupuncture and physiotherapy complement each other well. Combining dry needing or acupuncture with physiotherapy is an effective way to reduce pain and inflammation during the acute phase of an injury or when a painful condition begins to impact your activities of daily living. You may ask if this is a double treatment? How does it work? Do you charge twice, one fee for physio and another for acupuncture?
At Bloor Jane Physiotherapy, we do not charge another fee for acupuncture when it is part of the treatment. We consider it to be a skill that physiotherapists have in their ‘tool box’ of treatments. In Ontario, health care practitioners, like physiotherapists, chiropractors, and naturopaths may use acupuncture or dry needling within their scope of practice after undergoing post-graduate training. In general, physiotherapists prefer to use the term, dry needing, as it follows a more western approach to medicine.
Acupuncture is traditionally part of Chinese medicine, which uses acupuncture needles inserted along Meridian lines to balance the ‘Chi’ or energy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine every problem in the body happens due to a decrease or increase in ‘Chi’. Physiotherapists use fine acupuncture needles to target the anatomical structures and trigger points within the soft tissues, rather than focusing on meridian lines. Overall, acupuncture can be used in a non-traditional way to help physiotherapists achieve more successful treatment outcomes. Our senior physiotherapists have been using dry needling with physiotherapy treatments for various conditions presented by the client ranging from pain, loss of range of motion or myofascial tightness.
Dry needling helps reduce the pain in soft tissues ranging from stiff joints to tight fascia or muscle spasm. Pain is the most common symptom treated by physiotherapists and dry needling effectively can release endorphins that assist in controlling pain. Acupuncture calms nervous system activity to relax muscle spasm and guarding around the injury, and it also reduces the emotional anxiety associated with it. Dry needling or acupuncture is not a painful procedure. Acupuncture can help almost immediately after an injury and can result in a faster recovery.
Overall, dry needling can be very effective as an adjunct to other physiotherapy treatments. GIVE A GIFT OF GOOD HEALTH THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Are you looking for a gift this Holiday Season, either Christmas or Hanukkah, but it’s hard to find? The gift of health is the best gift of all! Whether for fitness, therapy, or self-help tools, the gift of better health is good for everyone on your shopping list and at Bloor Jane Physiotherapy, we have them in stock for you.
• Treat Your Own Back book with accompanying lumbar roll. $42.50
• Treat Your Own Neck book with accompanying cervical roll. $42.50
• “Stretch Out Strap” with accompanying instruction booklet. $39.50
• McConnell Tape and one training session for its application. $39.50
• Give a gift of Therapeutic Massage. $52.00 -$130.00
Prices vary according to time. (Please Note: Add tax to all the above prices.)
The McKenzie Method described in Treat Your Own Back and Treat your Own Neck books can be the roadmap to help you treat your own back or neck pain. If you have periods where you were pain-free and able to move or if certain movements reduced the pain, but some aggravated it, then you will benefit from the information and exercises in these books.
The Stretch Out Strap delivers the benefits of assisted stretching without a partner. This durable, woven strap features multiple loops that permit deep, gradual stretching of major muscle groups with control and effectiveness. It’s perfect for more effective warm-up or cool down stretches after any sport. It can help your stretching regime in yoga or fitness classes.
McConnell Tape consists of two different rolls of tape: the white Hypafix and the brown Leukotape. Applied one on top of the other at the front of the knee, the McConnell taping technique can enable the patella to track correctly and help reduce knee pain. It can also be used to help align other joints. Our physiotherapists teach each person the correct application for your specific needs and watch as you learn to do it yourself.
Massage by an RMT. In general, a massage can do wonders for aching muscles and a massage by our Registered Massage Therapist can target your specific tight muscles and stiff joints. Help your loved one reduce their aches and pains by giving a gift of a therapeutic massage.
Come to Bloor Jane Physiotherapy at 2425 Bloor St W for a gift of good health this Christmas.
