Do I need an x-ray to diagnose my low back pain? ⠀
⠀
In general--> NOPE. ⠀
⠀
In the vast majority of low back pain cases, there is no need to go and get an x-ray to diagnose your low back pain. This is for a variety of reasons but the main one is that whatever they find on the x-ray is likely not the cause of your low back pain. Like every other part of your body, your low back ages with time, and it will show that age with minor changes in the disc height, disc shape and bone structure. However, this is COMPLETELY NORMAL. At some point, everyone is going to have changes to their low back, it is part of life and is not the reason that you are in pain. You can have two people with completely identical x-rays who are in very different amounts of pain. There are a multitude of factors involved in someone's pain experience including stress and anxiety levels, quality of sleep, activity level, coping ability, etc, and these are far more important than what your x-ray looks like. ⠀
⠀
So what does this mean? ⠀
⠀
It means that your x-ray is just a cool picture of your spine, but won't tell you much about your pain. Even if you can see changes on an x-ray, your back is still strong and resilient. Most causes of low back pain will clear and will not lead to long term disability irrespective of what the x-ray looks like. Stay positive, stay active, and if you need a little more help then you can always consult your local chiropractor or other health professional!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
