How prevalent are concussions? Well it very much depends who you ask...

It is estimated that 50% of concussions sustained while playing sports are never reported. This means that players are at an increased risk of prolonged recovery if they are never seen by a certified healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Did you know that you do not need to sustain another head impact after a concussion to increase your risk of prolonged concussion symptoms? Staying in a game after sustaining a concussion, even if you are never hit in the head again, increases the risk that you have concussion symptoms that last longer than 10 days.

You are always smarter to stay on the safe side, take yourself or your players out the game and make sure they get the proper medical attention. At worst you were wrong and they missed the rest of the game. At best, you saved them from sustaining additional season and even life threatening injuries.

Hit. Stop. Sit.

IT'S A BLIZZARD!

With the first big snow fall of the year, most of us woke up to a foot of snow and a driveway to shovel. Unfortunately, shovelling snow leads to countless numbers of back injuries each and every year. The combination of the bitter cold, the heavy snow, and the shear number of shovels it takes to fully clear a driveway means that your back may be susceptible to becoming injured. While I can't do anything about the cold, there are a few simple tips and tricks that can lead to a more enjoyable time shovelling and a happy back!

New year, new diet!⠀

Losing weight is everyone's mind right now coming off the holidays and making New Year's resolutions. But with so much information out there, it can be hard to know who to listen to and how to get started. ⠀

The good news is, getting started is much easier than you think!⠀

In general, there is very little difference between diets in terms of what works the best for weight loss. The biggest factor is not the diet, but your ability to stick with the diet over the long term. Therefore, you will see much better results picking a diet that you will enjoy eating, rather than trying to force yourself to adhere to the most recent trend. ⠀

If you are ever in doubt with what to do, listen to Michael Pollan's golden rule from In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto: "Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants"⠀

Do I need an x-ray to diagnose my low back pain? ⠀

In general--> NOPE. ⠀

In the vast majority of low back pain cases, there is no need to go and get an x-ray to diagnose your low back pain. This is for a variety of reasons but the main one is that whatever they find on the x-ray is likely not the cause of your low back pain. Like every other part of your body, your low back ages with time, and it will show that age with minor changes in the disc height, disc shape and bone structure. However, this is COMPLETELY NORMAL. At some point, everyone is going to have changes to their low back, it is part of life and is not the reason that you are in pain. You can have two people with completely identical x-rays who are in very different amounts of pain. There are a multitude of factors involved in someone's pain experience including stress and anxiety levels, quality of sleep, activity level, coping ability, etc, and these are far more important than what your x-ray looks like. ⠀

So what does this mean? ⠀

It means that your x-ray is just a cool picture of your spine, but won't tell you much about your pain. Even if you can see changes on an x-ray, your back is still strong and resilient. Most causes of low back pain will clear and will not lead to long term disability irrespective of what the x-ray looks like. Stay positive, stay active, and if you need a little more help then you can always consult your local chiropractor or other health professional!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Pain is just pain, right? It may not be so simple...⠀

There are actually many different types of pain, and not all pain is created equal. Two of the most common types of pain that come from the musculoskeletal system are referred pain and radicular pain. ⠀

While they arise from different types of injuries, they both can lead to the experience of pain being felt far from where the actual tissue injury occurred. As great as our brain is for many different things, one of the things that it struggles with is determining where the exact source of pain is coming from. This can lead to pain "travelling" to all sorts of unrelated places and lead to a much more painful experience overall. ⠀

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis and affects around 4 million Canadians, or 1 in 7 adults.⠀

While it is normally thought to be a condition associated with aging, one third of all people diagnosed with arthritis are under the age of 45. Common symptoms of osteoarthritis include joint pain, swelling, crepitus and stiffness that is worse in the morning and lasts less than 30 minutes.⠀

While it is true that osteoarthritis occurs because of a breakdown of the cartilage within a joint, there are a lot of myths surrounding what causes arthritis, where the pain comes from, and the types of things that make it worse. While there is currently not a cure for arthritis, it is certainly not always going to lead to a joint replacement, and there are many things that you can do to help your condition! ⠀

*This post is meant for informational purposes only. If you think that you may have osteoarthritis please seek the care of a medical professional for proper diagnosis and treatment advise*

For most people, injuries of the low back are soft tissue injuries of the muscles or joints. While lying in bed and giving your back time to heal may seem like the right thing to do, it can actually do more harm than good in the long term. ⠀

Soft tissue injuries, especially those in your back, respond best to relative rest in the short term and graded activity exposure in the long term. There is nothing wrong with taking it easy for a few days to let the symptoms settle, but that does not mean not doing any activity. That means doing your normal daily activities and staying as active as possible, as long as it doesn't significantly increase your symptoms.⠀

Once a few days have passed and the initial symptoms have started to settle, it is time to start re-introducing movement and exercise and slowly exposing your back to increasing demands. This includes exercises that use your back. Start slow, lift light and be careful, but you do not need to avoid using your back all together. Graded activity exposure has been shown to be one of the best ways to ensure quick and full healing from low back injuries in recent clinical reviews. ⠀

Your back is strong and made to heal. Given the right stimulus and adequate time, your back will get to feeling as it once did. Don't be scared of movement, as it is movement that will help you get there. When in doubt--> PEACE AND LOVE.

Disc herniations are a common problem that are seen in chiropractic clinics. Common symptoms of a disc herniation are pain, weakness and numbness in the arms, hands, legs or feet. ⠀

The two most common causes of disc herniation are aging and trauma. While disc herniations can be painful and debilitating, most symptomatic herniations will resolve within 6 weeks on their own. ⠀

However, there are still things that your chiropractor can do to help! In addition to properly diagnosing a disc herniation, your chiropractor can educate you on how to stay active safely, symptoms to watch out for, tips on how to reduce your pain a home, and provide in clinic treatment to reduce your symptoms. ⠀

If you or someone you know thinks they have suffered a disc herniation, visit a chiropractor to see how they can help you!
