In our series, , we connect with healthcare teams at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network and hear how they are caring for themselves and for each other. Here is a unique way one team lifts themselves up by extending their compassion beyond the hospital walls. They adapted this initiative, originally based on 24gooddeeds.ca, to make it secular.

"During the holidays, we get a charity calendar called 24 Good Deeds. Daily at each huddle, we open one of the doors and behind is a donation to a different charity. It helps support organizations that are doing fantastic work around the world, and raises awareness among all of us. It helps us feel that as a team, we’re making a difference.” - Radiation Therapist

Meet Dr. Lillian Siu, Medical Oncologist : Meet Dr. Lillian Siu, who is a Medical Oncologist, Director of Phase I Clinicals Trials Program in Solid Tumors and Co-Lead, Tumor Immunotherapy Program at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. In these roles Dr. Siu is committed to conducting early phase trials to evaluate the safety and preliminary antitumor activity of new drugs, such as novel molecularly targeted agents and immunotherapy with the hope of making a difference in the lives of cancer patients. She reveals what drives her forward in this work.

“I am inspired by the teams I work with, whether they are patient-facing or not, everyone works tirelessly to bring the best care and research to our patients. Frequently the teams work beyond their standard hours and make extra efforts to achieve such goals. I am also immensely inspired by my patients who are fighting cancers with strength, courage and will. Many patients participate in clinical trials with altruism to advance knowledge in science and medicine, when there may be no personal benefit to themselves.”

“In my role, I draw strength from the people I work with. They inspire me to dream big for our program and for our oncology patients. This fuels my passion for practice and continues to push me forward towards a future of continued excellence in cancer care and meeting the ever-changing needs of our patients. We are a unique cancer centre with incredible potential. My role involves tapping into that potential and fostering its growth. I am humbled by the patients I meet and by the people I work with. PM is truly a special place, full of special people.

Outside of work, I love to bake! It allows me to create wonderful projects that I share with friends and family. Who doesn’t like a dose of sugar every now and then?" You can follow Maggie’s baking adventures on Instagram –at !”

In our series, , we connect with healthcare teams at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network to hear how they are caring for themselves and for each other. Even though we were meeting with the Urgent Care Team on a particularly busy day, it was encouraging to hear what they had to say:

“Hard days are made easy because of great teamwork. I never leave wishing I was more supported, that’s what keeps me coming back.”-Registered Nurse, Urgent Care Unit, at the Huddle.

Happy Halloween! 🎃 Throwback to the fantastic costumes that radiation therapists Iris Wong, Amanda Moreira, Winnie Li and Jennifer Dang sported last year at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network. Winnie Li is embodying the perfect ‘2020 Snow Globe!’ - sanitary wipes, toilet paper, social distancing, and Netflix... this costume had it all! ✨

Here’s to the healthcare workers at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, whose care goes beyond taking vitals and administering medications. Dressing up for Halloween, among other small actions, warms up the hospital environment and makes a world difference to our patients and families.
