Jay-Z has shared a statement following the news that New York has become the latest US state to legalise the recreational use of cannabis.

Last week (March 31), it was announced that New Yorkers over the age of 21 can now possess and use up to three ounces of cannabis in public under a legalisation bill signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The deal allows the “delivery of the drug and permit club-like lounges or ‘consumption sites’ where ma*****na, but not alcohol, could be consumed”. Individuals will also be permitted to grow up to six ma*****na plants at home for personal use...

TORONTO -- These are heady times for the cannabis industry.
Countries from Mexico to Norway are taking concrete steps towards decriminalizing the drug.

The biggest prize of all is the American market, where cannabis is now broadly legal in 15 states, and analysts believe the dominoes will keep falling.

With that liberalization of pot laws comes increased investment – but also a greater focus on the environmental cost of cultivation...

The executive turntable at the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) is spinning again, with the provincial wholesale monopoly and online retailer about to get its sixth president in three years.
The rapid executive turnover has some industry watchers concerned the organization might be lacking executive continuity.
Thomas Haig, who was appointed interim president in September 2020, is stepping down when his contract comes to an end later this month, the OCS announced last week.
He will be replaced next week on an interim basis by David Lobo, who is currently the OCS’ chief merchandising officer.

Haig took over on a temporary basis last September from Cal Bricker, who had been installed as interim CEO about a year earlier.
Lobo will be the organization’s third straight temporary chief executive since September 2019.
The turnover is leading some business sources to question the direction – or lack thereof – of an organization that plays a pivotal role in the industry as the sole online retailer and wholesaler of adult-use ma*****na in Canada’s largest consumer market.

A study set to publish in the journal, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, has found that legalizing cannabis has led to a “marked decline” in the volume of opioids prescribed across Canada.

Nearly 18,000 Canadians died from an opioid-related overdose from January 2016 to June 2020, according to the federal Public Health Infobase.

“Our findings support the hypothesis that easier access to cannabis for pain may reduce opioid use for both public and private drug plans,” notes the study abstract.

In May 2019, I launched a community service called Get Your Drugs Tested at 880 East Hastings. Funded entirely by our unlicensed cannabis dispensary, we've now tested over 10,000 street drug samples, free of charge, as a way of helping tp keep the drug-using community safe.

We have two machines called "FTIR Spectrometers" which allow us to quickly analyze most kinds of chemical substances. We can't do herbs like whole cannabis, but we can analyze all kinds of street drugs, anything from he**in to co***ne, xanax to vi**ra, L*D to DMT. We also use fentanyl test strips when needed to be extra sure.

If you think you’ve seen an awful lot of new cannabis shops popping up around Toronto recently, it’s not your imagination.
While many businesses have been struggling during the pandemic, new cannabis retailers keep opening in the city and across Ontario.
Lisa Campbell, founder and CEO of cannabis sales and marketing company Mercari Agency, said that despite the sudden uptick in new stores there still aren’t enough — the biggest issue in the market right now is product oversupply, she says, relative to the number of shops.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, facing a huge budget deficit, rolled out a plan to legalize ma*****na for adult recreational use in 2021.
The plan includes using tax revenue to help fill the state's nearly $4 billion budget gap for the next fiscal year. However, the CEO of the National Cannabis Industry Association told FOX Business that it could go up in smoke if taxes are too high.
“We definitely want to make sure that taxes are not so prohibitive that it pushes the market back underground,” Aaron Smith told Kristina Partsinevelos. “I hope that we can come to a place where it’s taxed in a manner that it’s somewhat similar to alcohol.”
Cuomo, during his State of the State last week, said the industry will eventually lead to 60,000 new jobs, $3.5 billion in economic activity, and $300 million in tax revenue.

The music business has always had a strong connection to cannabis. While its ties to artists have mainly been recreational, indelibly linked with decades-ago photos of icons like Jerry Garcia, Bob Marley and Willie Nelson, the industry has clearly changed.
The natural fit between pop culture and cannabis remains as strong as ever, but the legalization of adult-use w**d in Canada has contributed to a dramatic cultural shift that has expanded the reach well beyond rock ’n roll.

The mother of a nine-year-old boy with a rare and severe form of epilepsy has told how she fears her son could die after the government announced his supply of a life-changing cannabis medicine from the Netherlands would stop because of Brexit.
Hannah Deacon was given just two weeks notice by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) that due to the end of the transition period “prescriptions issued in the UK can no longer be lawfully dispensed in an EU member state”.
Her campaign to save her son Alfie Dingley’s life in 2017 led to a change in the law enabling the medicine which has seen him seizure free after years of 150 seizures a week, to be prescribed in the UK.

Arianne Persaud has been using more cannabis this year, after losing a restaurant industry job at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To cope with the stress of being unemployed, Persaud initially turned to alcohol.
But Persaud decided to cut down the drinking and consume more cannabis for relief after noticing a decline in physical and mental health.
“With alcohol there’s always this extreme emotion, it’s either you’re celebrating something or drowning in your sorrows,” said the Toronto resident.
“I find with cannabis, I’m able to use it in a way that’s mindful, I can be alone and meditative.”
Persaud isn’t the only one using cannabis more as the pandemic continues to rage.
Almost 30 per cent of Canadians say their cannabis usage has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic began, according to a September poll for Mental Health Research Canada.
