“Running ruins your knees” is one of the most commonly accepted myths in healthcare, but current evidence doesn’t support it. Multiple large, peer-reviewed studies have shown that recreational runners do not experience worse knee outcomes than non-runners, and some research even suggests runners may have a lower risk of developing knee osteoarthritis over time.
The key is how you train:
• Gradual increases in mileage
• Strong hip and quad muscles for support
• Good running mechanics
• Proper recovery and load management
Running can be part of a healthy, joint-friendly lifestyle. If you’ve been avoiding running because of knee pain or uncertainty, our physiotherapists can assess your form, guide your training progression, and help you stay active safely.
