During the holiday season, sipping hot chocolate or mulled wine can temporarily soften tooth enamel due to the high temperatures and acidity, making teeth more prone to damage from cold air or sweets right after. This “thermal shock” effect spikes dental emergencies around Christmas, as people alternate between piping hot drinks and icy treats without waiting for enamel to reharden. Brushing immediately after such drinks actually worsens erosion by scrubbing away the softened layer.

Winter’s chill can make your teeth twinge because cold air causes tiny enamel cracks from expansion and contraction, exposing sensitive dentin beneath—like your smile getting a frosty surprise party it didn’t RSVP for! Sinus pressure from seasonal colds adds to the fun, mimicking toothaches as inflammation pinches nerves. Breathe easy with a scarf over your mouth outdoors to keep that winter grin zing-free! ❄️🦷

Not to be a grinch but...Sugar in candy canes fuels oral bacteria, which produce acids that erode enamel and cause cavities, especially since they dissolve slowly for prolonged exposure. Biting down on their hard surface risks chipping or cracking teeth. The residue clings to teeth, promoting plaque buildup and decay.
To mitigate risks-suck rather than bite candy canes to avoid fractures, limit intake, and rinse with water afterward to reduce sugar contact. Brush and floss regularly post-consumption, and opt for treats like dark chocolate that clear the mouth faster. Schedule dental check-ups to monitor for issues.

Also found in your toothpaste and mouthwash, the fluoride in the drinking water having topical contact on the teeth can help keep them healthy, and decrease the risk of developing cavities. Many cities in North America add fluoride to the public drinking water, making it easily accessible.

If you’d prefer not to consume tap water, try simply swishing with it a few times a week, as you would with your favorite mouthwash.

If you are experiencing a toothache, but then the pain subsides, you should still see your dentist as soon as you can. Cavities often cause toothaches, as untreated cavities can reach a nerve inside your tooth, causing pain.

If the pain stops, the problem has not disappeared, but rather the cavity has killed the nerve inside your tooth.
