Fact Fridays!

Hearing aids work by amplifying the sound coming into your ear. Every hearing aid has a microphone which picks up sound from outside the ear. The sound is then amplified by the hearing aid and then sent into your ear through a speaker.

Many hearing aids now are digital which means we can adjust specific frequencies where you might need more or less amplification. This is why a recent hearing test is so important because then we can calibrate the hearing aid to fit your exact pattern of hearing loss!

Your hearing aid could have multiple listening programs that specialize in different environments. These programs can be tuned for situations where there might be a lot of background noise like in a mall, or for situations where there is little background noise like your bedroom. These programs can be automatically changed to adapt to your environment or manually changed by you.

TLDR:
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs due to damage to the inner ear (cochlea) and/or the auditory nerve. This could be caused by age, disease, genetics, lifestyle, or noise.

Conductive hearing loss happens when there is interference with the transmission of sound from the outer to the inner ear. This could be from earwax, a perforated eardrum, buildup of fluid, or damage to the middle ear structures.

Fact Fridays!

Ménière’s disease is a chronic condition caused by abnormal fluid buildup in the inner ear. It most commonly appears during young to middle adulthood but could occur at any age and presents in only one ear.

Common symptoms include spells of vertigo which come and go without warning. You might also experience hearing loss typically in the low and/or high frequencies. Other symptoms include tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and a feeling of fullness in the ear.

If you suspect you have Ménière’s disease, consult your doctor to rule out other causes. You might also benefit from a hearing test and hearing aids to ensure you can hear your best.

Here at Life Hearing Solutions, we offer complementary hearing tests and can match you to the perfect pair of hearing aids. Come visit our hearing specialist today or visit our website: lifehearingsolutions.com, for more information.

Fact Fridays!

Noise exposure can be detrimental to your hearing health. Even one-time excessive noise exposure could cause permanent hearing damage. Loud noises can damage and even destroy the hair cells in our ears. Without our hair cells, we would be unable to send signals that our brain interprets as sound.

You may have noticed after going to a concert or a loud sporting event that you temporarily are not able to hear quieter sounds. This happens because your hair cells are overworked. Our hair cells bend more to louder sounds, and will require some time to fully recover. If they get bent too much or too often, these cells can die. This damage is usually permanent and cannot be recovered.

It is essential you protect your ears with properly fitted ear plugs if you are entering a loud environment. As well, if you use earphones, take a break after 60 minutes and listen at less than 50% volume.

If you think you might have hearing loss, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with our hearing specialist today. We also supply ear plugs for swimming, noise cancellation, and music protection. For more information visit our website: lifehearingsolutions.com.

Fact Fridays!

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is a common issue, affecting around 15-20% of all individuals. It is more common in older adults and seniors. Many people describe a ringing in the ears, but other sounds include buzzing, roaring, clicking, hissing, or humming in one or both ears.

Tinnitus can develop because of an ear canal blockage or infection, injury to the head or neck, heart or vascular disorder, or can be a sign of hearing loss. Some medications could worsen tinnitus as well.

Important‼️ Limiting loud noise exposure and/or wearing hearing protection can help decrease your risk of developing tinnitus!

If tinnitus is disrupting your day to day living, schedule a visit with your family doctor. As well, if you suspect you could have hearing loss, feel free to drop by our clinic for a no obligation hearing test. A properly calibrated hearing aid will make it easier for you to hear and could make it less likely for you to notice your tinnitus.

Fact Fridays!

Did you know that Cerumen (Earwax) Impaction can cause temporary hearing loss? This happens in about 5% of healthy children, 10% of healthy adults, and over half of nursing home patients. If you wear hearing aids, there is a higher chance this can occur as well.

Cerumen (Earwax) is produced naturally by the body and is made to lubricate and protect our ear canals. It also contains antibacterial agents! The wax we produce can be cleared naturally by our body, but for some people, this process could be interrupted.

If you notice symptoms such as hearing loss, itching or pain in the ear, a sensation of fullness in the ear, or tinnitus (ringing in the ears), this could be a sign of Cerumen (Earwax) Impaction.

Caution ⚠️: Many people insert cotton swabs into their ear canal to remove earwax, but this could cause more harm than good. Cotton swabs can push the earwax deeper into the ear canal and could result in cuts and abrasions as well.

However, do not fret! At Life Hearing Solutions, we offer Cerumen (Earwax) removal services. Call, visit us at one of our locations, or visit our website: lifehearingsolutions.ca for more information!

We won’t stop there either, we’re always looking for new ways to engage with our neighbours.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve volunteered our time to provide free delivery of hearing aid batteries and accessories. As well as collecting and distributing small lap tables to assist our senior patients. Beginning in February, we’ve hosted healthy hearing lectures online, as well as coordinated sewing activities for front line workers to help our community.

研究名为“The Impact of Self-Reported Vision and Hearing Impairment on Health Expectancy(自我报告视力和听力障碍对健康预期的影响)”,发表于《美国老年医学学会杂志》中。
