Reflecting on Budget 2025

Yesterday, the federal government released Budget 2025: Canada Strong, outlining new investments intended to strengthen Canada’s economic and social foundations, including some meaningful commitments related to health.

Dietitians of Canada welcomes the government’s recognition of the importance of investing in Canadians’ health and improving access to health services across Canada, including Indigenous and rural communities.

We are pleased to see the government’s decision to make the National School Food Program permanent. This is a meaningful investment in the health of children, and a recognition of the essential role that food and nutrition play in supporting their well-being

At the same time, we are disappointed that student loan forgiveness for health professionals, like dietitians, was not included in this year’s budget. With workforce shortages and growing demands on the health system, measures to reduce financial barriers for new graduates entering practice remain critical.

Our association will continue to advocate for policies that support a strong, sustainable health system that promotes equitable food and nutrition for every Canadian.

➡️ In Ontario currently, the “as of right” rules allow nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists and medical laboratory technologists from other provinces and territories to work in Ontario for up to six months while they seek registration with their profession’s Ontario regulator. The government’s proposed changes would expand that list to 16 additional health professions, including dietitians.

Dietitians of Canada welcomes this initiative and looks forward to improved labour mobility for the profession to better serve the Canadian health system.

“Can we really restore our gut microbiome to an ‘ancestral’ state?” 🌿

A new diet is getting attention in nutrition research. The NiMe Diet (Non-industrialized Microbiome Restore) is designed to bring our modern gut microbiomes closer to those of traditional, non-industrialized populations. But what does the evidence actually say?

We’re breaking it down:

🔍 What’s happening
🥗 What the NiMe Diet is
📊 What the research found
✅ What it means for dietitians in practice

✨ Hint: The NiMe Diet may support cardiometabolic health, but its microbiome effects remain uncertain.

The National School Food Program becomes permanent

In advance of the upcoming federal budget, PM Carney announced that the government is moving forward to make the National School Food Program permanent.

First announced in 2024 with an investment of $1 billion over five years, the program will receive permanent funding of $216.6 million per year, starting in 2029-30.

As a member of the Coalition for Healthy School Food, Dietitians of Canada expresses support for this decision. The expansion of the program into more schools across provinces, territories and Indigenous communities is important in ensuring that children across Canada have access to the nutritious food they need.

DC also calls attention to the need for long-term solutions to address inequities in food access and household food insecurity.
