Throughout February, we celebrate and honour Black History Month, a time to reflect, learn and recognize the ongoing contributions of Black communities.

This year, MGH's theme, “Pathways with Purpose: Black Experiences in the Healthcare Workforce”, highlights the journeys Black healthcare workers have taken to lead, serve and make meaningful impacts across Canada’s healthcare system.

Since the early 1600s, Black communities and people of African descent have shaped and strengthened the cultural, social and health landscape of Canada. This month at MGH, we will be focused on elevating Black voices, sharing lived experiences and celebrating the leadership of Black Canadians.

tells the story of our people. Meet James Callahan, Manager, Infection Prevention and Control at MGH.

“I’ve worked at MGH for almost 12 years but it still surprises people to know that I didn’t start out in healthcare,” says James.

“I originally worked in animation and graphic design. But in 2011, while on a cross-country biking trip, I met a fellow traveler who was a nurse. I was so impressed with his skillset and thought nursing sounded like very valuable work. That meeting prompted me to make a career change.”

Longtime MGH volunteer Betty Hicks cuddles with baby Woods during a volunteer shift. Betty spoke to CTV News about her experience as one of our 14 baby cuddling volunteers, and her role in the creation and expansion of the program at MGH.

“It’s a positive for the infant, it’s a positive for staff, and it’s a positive for the volunteers and also the families,” she says.

We’re reaching back into the archives to ten years ago. What was happening at MGH in 2016? 🧐

🏥 We were looking towards the future of healthcare! The final phase of planning for our redevelopment project was underway.

🚴 We were excited to install a bike share to the corner of Coxwell and Mortimer Avenues. Staff traded in four wheels for two on Ride Your Bike to Work Day!

🧘 In addition to physical wellness, we were also focused on wellness for the mind. Classes for mindful meditation took place in our Wellness Studio for staff to unwind and reset.

tells the stories of our people. Meet Dr. Noah Ditkofsky, Chief and Medical Program Director of Medical Imaging at MGH.

“The images that guide treatment decisions aren’t interpreted by computers or by the doctors showing them to patients. They’re interpreted by a radiologist who sees the full picture. That responsibility drew me in,” says Dr. Ditkofsky.

“The most rewarding part of my job is solving the unanswered question. We conduct a lot of imaging to try to uncover what’s happening with a patient. But sometimes, it’s about putting together pieces of a clinical picture to find what no one else can see or to provide the clarity that a patient has been searching for. Being part of that discovery is deeply meaningful.

“At the end of the day, everything we do comes back to helping our patients. If we stay true to that, we’re doing the right thing.”

Since launching in August 2024, MGH’s Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) has supported over 1,900 older adult patients through more than 6,500 visits and therapeutic activities.

HELP uses daily visits, therapeutic activities and companionship to prevent delirium and improve the patient experience of older adults during hospital stays. With about 20 volunteers and 12 to 15 health professional externs, the program has expanded to additional units across our hospital.

Thank you to Ontario Hospital Association for sharing this program!

To enhance comfort, connection and independence for older adults in their care, Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto East Health Network (MGH) is rolling out its Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) across more inpatient units.

“We're not only treating medical conditions but caring for the whole person, because our approach recognizes that older adults have unique physical, emotional and cognitive needs during a hospital stay,” says Jennifer Sampson, Director of Seniors and Aging and Transitional Care at MGH.
