Cancer survivorship includes anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer regardless of where they are in the course of their disease; anyone receiving active treatment (think chemotherapy, radiation or surgery), those on maintenance therapy (hello Tamoxifen), or those who have recovered and have been cancer free for many years.

Understanding medical decisions, accessing necessary support and re-establishing enjoyment in life are important factors for all cancer survivors.

A Naturopathic Doctor focused in integrative cancer care can help you navigate this difficult time by providing supportive care through supplements, lifestyle and dietary recommendations. Through these supportive measures, your outcomes may be improved and you may be able to prevent recurrence.

Cancer survivorship is a lifelong journey. Unsure what's right for you? Reach out and I can chat with you more.

✨Diagnosing breast cancer in young women can be challenging ✨⁣

Why?

As a woman under 40 your breast tissue may not only be more dense (making it hard to see concerning changes) but initially changes may look much more like a cyst than cancer. ⁣

What does this mean?

As a young woman, if you’ve found any abnormal lumps in your breasts, you may not be referred for a mammogram or MRI initially. Instead you’ll often be sent for an ultrasound. If this shows changes that look like a benign, non-cancerous cyst the recommendation is often to wait and redo this in a few months. ⁣

🤷🏻‍♀️ Not comfortable with a watch-and-wait approach? There's a good reason for that❗️⁣

A study looking at the diagnosis of breast cancer in women under 40 (compared to women over the age of 40) found that: ⁣

🔹With a mammogram, breast cancer in younger women was more likely to go UNDETECTED or interpreted as BENIGN, especially in women with dense breasts. ⁣

🔹 And despite abnormalities being detected on ultrasound in 92.2% of cancers in young women, those changes were more likely to be considered benign than in older women. ⁣

✨ This highlights what we already know about missing new diagnoses of breast cancer young women. And as I continue to see more women being diagnosed before they’re 40 it’s time we pay attention to this!⁣

🌿 If you’re concerned about a lump or breast change, ultrasound is not enough. Advocate for follow-up testing and proper confirmation, or speak with someone who can help advocate on your behalf.

✨ Finding your community can be a game changer when facing breast cancer ✨

There are so many questions that come up after being diagnosed, and while your oncology team is there to guide treatment, it can be hard to find connection around everything that comes along with all these changes. Especially if you’re a young woman!

❓What can I bring to chemotherapy to make the time pass?

❓Now that my skin is so sensitive, what lotions are best to use on my face and body?

⁉️ I knew I might lose my hair but is anyone else losing nose hairs?

❓How long after treatment did other women start thinking about having a family again?

Even before COVID so many women found that their network of ongoing support changed after diagnosis, and with people being even more cautious these days it can leave you feeling pretty isolated.

If you haven’t found connection,👇🏽 check out these amazing organizations for articles, events, groups, and message boards that you can connect into as you find your way through this.💡

🌿 If you have more questions message me anytime or book in for a chat. I’m always here as a resource and sounding board.

✨Let’s chat about those dreaded hot flashes✨⁣

In breast cancer, hot flashes can become part of daily life following chemotherapy. Or they can start when you go on medications like Tamoxifen.⁣

For so many women, this can feel like a frustrating new part of life you just have to endure.⁣

But there are options 🌿⁣

One of my favourites is acupuncture. Not only is it safe during other treatments but in women taking Tamoxifen it’s been shown to:⁣

❌ Lower the intensity of hot flashes⁣

❌ Reduce the frequency of hot flashes⁣

❌ Improve night sweats⁣

If you’re struggling with hot flashes, there ARE options! Check out a post I wrote all about hot flashes in my bio ☝🏽or DM me to chat further. ⁣

Yours in health,⁣

Dr. Clarence, ND

✨ A powerful reminder that knowing something is wrong is not always enough to get a proper diagnosis✨⁣

Black and white women are diagnosed with cancer at almost the same rate in Canada and the US 〰️ but black women are more likely to be diagnosed earlier in life and often are diagnosed at later stages of disease progression. ⁣

💡 Healthy breasts can feel lumpy or uneven. You may notice that they change around the time of your period, during and after pregnancy, if your weight changes, and when you’re taking certain medications. ⁣

While most breast changes are not a sign of cancer, it’s important to know when to get a second opinion about changes you notice at home. ⁣

🔹LUMPS🔹 the most concerning type of lump is one that’s painless and hard, with irregular edges. But breast cancer lumps can also be tender, soft, round, and even painful. ⁣

While DUCTAL breast cancer often shows up as a firm or hard lump that feels very different from the rest of the breast, LOBULAR breast cancer often does not form a lump; instead it may feel like the tissue in the breast is getting thicker or harder. Breast cancer lumps won’t get smaller or come and go with your period. ⁣

🔹SWELLING🔹 even without a lump, swelling in your breast that doesn’t go away after your period comes / goes should be followed-up on. This kind of swelling can alter the size or shape of your breast. ⁣

🔹NIPPLE CHANGES🔹 this includes ni**le pain, discharge, changes in the shape of your ni**le, ni**le retraction, and even skin that is red, flaking or thickening.⁣

🌿 Trust your gut, if you feel something is wrong don’t ignore your body’s signals.⁣

If you have questions about changes you’ve noticed, reach out anytime. ✨

This past thanksgiving weekend provided me with some much needed space to slow down and really consider what I want to prioritize this fall.

I hope that no matter where you're at this week, you give yourself some space to check-in and decide who and what you want to prioritize as you move through this beautiful, colourful season of change.

It's been a long road getting here! To give you some context I thought I'd include a few posts around my own story.

First up, a little background.

1: I’ve been a bit nomadic, both as a child and as an adult. I was born in Alberta, graduated from high school in BC, began my undergraduate degree in Saskatchewan, completed my Bachelor of Kinesiology back in BC, moved to Montreal, returned to Vancouver, and finally arrived here in Toronto to study naturopathic medicine.

2: I was planning on becoming a fashion designer. As a teenager I was deeply involved in design, working toward moving to New York to study at Parsons. But as I got older, my goals started to shift and I became more interested in people and how they access and engage with their health. So I changed directions and opted to study Kinesiology, with the ultimate goal of pursuing medicine. By third year I finally had the clarity to see exactly where I wanted to go in medicine and my decision to become a Naturopathic Doctor was solidified!
