You’re not imagining it—one side of the face can feel more sensitive during injections.

Research suggests the left side of the face is often perceived as more painful, likely due to how the brain processes sensation. The right hemisphere (which processes the left side of the face) plays a stronger role in pain perception and emotional response, which can amplify how injections feel.

There are also natural differences in nerve sensitivity and facial asymmetry—so even with identical technique, each side can feel slightly different.

The good news?

Everyone’s aging journey is unique, however when it comes to how our faces age, we often see three common patterns: gaunt/hollowing, full/heavy, and mixed presentation.

The “triangle of youth” refers to the natural facial structure we typically have when we are younger; with higher cheekbones, fuller temples, and a more defined jawline. This youthful shape exists because our bone structure, deep fat pads, and collagen support are intact.

As we age, collagen loss and volume depletion can cause this triangle to invert, leading to hollow temples, flattened cheeks, and less structural support through the mid and lower face.

For patients who fall into the gaunt or hollow category, the primary issue isn’t skin laxity - it’s volume and structural loss. In these cases, dermal filler is the only treatment modality that can restore that missing volume and rebuild facial architecture.
