if you watched til the end… Yes… what you’re seeing is a true knot in the umbilical cord.
And before anyone panics: a true knot is not automatically dangerous.
True knots happen in about 1% of pregnancies and most often form early in gestation, when babies have lots of room to swim, roll, and move through loops of cord. In the majority of cases, the knot stays loose and never affects blood flow. Most babies with true knots are born completely healthy, just like this little one. 💛
The important thing to understand is this:
✨ A true knot is not caused by anything the birthing person did.
✨ It does not mean the pregnancy was unsafe.
✨ It does not guarantee complications.
✨ It is often only discovered at birth, and when everything has already gone beautifully.
What matters most is that the birth team stays present, observant, and responsive. Good fetal monitoring, supportive care, and calm guidance ensure that if the knot were to tighten (which is rare), it would be caught early.
Moments like this remind us just how incredible the human body is… and how resilient babies are.
They also remind us why comprehensive, month-long doula training is so essential. Doulas learn how to support families through unexpected twists and turns with grounded information, emotional steadiness, and evidence-based care.
Birth is powerful. Birth is wise.
And even with surprises like a true knot… birth can still unfold safely, beautifully, and full of strength… just like this. ✨
