Repair and Recover: Facets of Fibrosis

Repair and Recover: Facets of Fibrosis Repair and Recovery: Facets of Fibrosis (RRFF) is the latest in the LMPSU's highly successful annual conference series.

Featuring seven esteemed speakers in the field of fibrosis, attendees will have the opportunity to gain a well-rounded understanding of the diverse approaches people have taken to solve real-world problems in fibrotic disease. Over the course of the day, presentations will cover both the basic science done in a laboratory as well as the clinical science involved in therapy development in a wide variety of fibrotic diseases, ranging from renal and pulmonary fibrosis to cystic fibrosis. A concurrent poster fair will showcase the work of the talented LMP undergraduate and graduate students and allow attendees to network with one another and the speakers. Please register for Repair and Recovery using Eventbrite. Lunch, snacks and refreshments will be available. If you have any dietary restrictions or other inquiries, please email us at lmpexecs@gmail.com. Visit our LMPSU page: https://www.facebook.com/lmpsu/

2 DAYS UNTIL THE CONFERENCE!!

Our final speaker, Dr. Andrew Leask is a professor in the Department of Dentistry at Western University in London, Ontario and a member of the American Society of Cell biology and the International CCN society. His research focuses on the molecular mechanism underlying fibrosis by studying scleroderma as a model disease. More specifically, Dr. Leask’s lab looks at the role of the microenvironment and mechanotransduction in skin and lung fibrosis.

4 more days until Repair and Recovery: Facets of Fibrosis!!!

Our second last speaker for the conference is Dr. Kjetil Ask, an assistant professor at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health in McMaster University. He is a translational scientist studying fibrotic lung disease and scleroderma and the role of alternatively activated macrophages in these diseases. Dr. Ask’s lab exams the molecular mechanisms involved in the polarization process of these macrophages and to identify therapeutic targets that may modulate their profibrotic properties.

A WEEK LEFT UNTIL THE CONFERENCE!!

We are excited to announce our next speaker, Dr. Andras Kapus, a professor in the department of Surgery and Biochemistry, the Associate Vice Chair of Research at the Department of Surgery, and the Head of Research Training Center at Keenan Research Center. Dr. Kapus’s research area focuses on the basic cell pathophysiology and cell biology, exploring the molecular mechanisms whereby the cytoskeleton regulates nuclear trafficking of transcription factors. His current major research focus is on the pathobiology of organ fibrosis, specifically kidney fibrosis.

Time to introduce the next speaker for the conference, Dr. Jeffrey Dickhout, an associate professor in the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine in McMaster University. His lab explores the mechanism involved in renal dysfunction by focusing on three major areas: 1) role of proteinuria in the progression of chronic kidney disease, 2) role of inflammation and apoptosis in chronic kidney disease, and 3) role of endoplasmic reticulum stress in kidney disease and renal fibrosis.

Happy New Year!!

Our next speaker for the conference, Dr. Darren Yuen, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, and a Scientist in the Keenan Research Centre of Biomedical Science and staff nephrologist at St. Michael’s Hospital. His team is interested in the relationships between organ stiffness and fibrosis and their goal is to develop better diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for the management of chronic fibrotic diseases.

We are thrilled to introduce our first presenter, Dr. Boris Hinz, who is University of Toronto Distinguished Professor in Tissue Repair and Regeneration with primary appointment in the Faculty of Dentistry, Matrix Dynamics Group. His research focuses on developing strategies to counteract the effects of myofibroblasts and the development of fibrosis. Dr. Hinz aims in understanding the role of contractile myofibroblasts in physiological tissue repair and in causing pathological tissue fibrosis.
