Healing heartburn 101
Conventional medical wisdom says if you have heartburn, take medication to neutralize stomach acid.
Well, what if you don't want to do that. What if you desire adequate stomach acid to digest, disinfect, and help you absorb minerals?
1. Try stimulating digestive juices before you eat. Maybe you need more, not less. Bitters, apple cider vinegar in water, and even lemon juice in water can help here.
2. Heal the stomach lining. There are herbs that help with gastritis (aloe, slippery elm, marshmallow, licorice). You can mix them up together or buy a combination product like Heartburn Essentials from Pure Encapsulations. Call Bari at BN Natural Foods, and he'll bring it in for you.
3. Digestive enzymes for large or decadent meals. Especially as we age, our enzyme production declines. Buy a full spectrum one - look for a bottle with a long list of enzymes. You may not understand them, but in this case, variety is the spice of life.
4. Eat regularly and not too much. Some of us have bodies that don't know when to expect food. This is problematic because stomach acid secretion likes to be on or off. Not constantly on - grazers, I'm looking at you. And not off and then ON - feast and famine eaters, I'm looking at you.
