🌟 You’re Invited: Annual Candlelight Services of Remembrance 🌟

As we approach the holiday season—a time that can feel especially tender after losing someone we love—we invite you to join us for our annual Candlelight Services of Remembrance.

This year holds special meaning as we also celebrate our 100th anniversary of serving families with compassion and care. In honour of this milestone, we welcome not only those who have experienced a loss this past year, but all families who feel called to gather, reflect, and remember their loved ones.

We will be hosting two services:

📅 Monday, November 24th at 6:00 PM
📍 St. Agnes Parish — 15 Grace St., Toronto
A Roman Catholic Mass celebrated primarily in Portuguese, with English included. Reception to follow.

📅 Thursday, December 4th at 6:00 PM
📍 St. Demetrius the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church — 135 La Rose Ave., Toronto
A Ukrainian Catholic service including both Ukrainian and English. Reception to follow.

At each service, guests will receive a simple Christmas ornament as a heartfelt keepsake to honour their loss during this meaningful season.

Whether you join us to light a candle, reflect quietly, or find comfort in community, we would be honoured to welcome you.

❤️ All are welcome.

Act #72 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness – Supporting Canadian Samaritans for Africa 🌍❤️

We were proud to support the Canadian Samaritans for Africa’s Annual Gala, which took place on November 7th, through a financial contribution toward their incredible mission.

Founded on the principles of love, friendship, solidarity, partnership, and collaboration, the Canadian Samaritans for Africa is a faith-based Canadian charity dedicated to empowering women-led, grassroots projects across Africa. Their work promotes self-sufficiency, education, health, agriculture, and clean water access—helping communities thrive through sustainable, women-driven development.

There’s also a special local connection: Susan HooKong-Taylor, the President of Canadian Samaritans for Africa and the cantor at St. Mary’s Church, serves many of the same families we have been privileged to support over the years.

We’re inspired by this organization’s commitment to empowering women and building stronger communities—values that reflect the heart of what we believe in, too. 💛

Act #71 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness – Honouring Lives at Toronto Western Hospital 🕊️

On October 27th, we were honoured to support Toronto Western Hospital’s Service of Remembrance, a moving event that commemorated patients who passed away between April and December 2024.

In honour of the occasion, we donated 100 long-stem carnations to be used during the service — one for each life remembered with love and gratitude. 🌸

These Services of Remembrance, held twice a year across the University Health Network, bring together families, friends, and staff to honour those who have passed while finding comfort in shared community and reflection. Attendees place flowers in vases and share words or memories of their loved ones — a simple, heartfelt gesture that represents healing and connection.

With Toronto Western Hospital located just across the street from our Bathurst Location, we witness firsthand the exceptional care, compassion, and dedication of its staff. We were humbled to once again be part of this meaningful service and to stand alongside a community united in remembrance.

We’ve also included a short video from last Fall’s Service of Remembrance, originally shared by UHN, which beautifully captures the emotion, reflection, and togetherness that make this annual gathering so special.

Act #70 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness - Cheering on the Runners! 🏃‍💙

This weekend, as part of our 100 Acts of Kindness initiative, our team joined in the excitement of the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon by spreading some cheer along the route!

Colleen and Aaron set up a “Cheer Station” right outside, inviting spectators to create colourful signs of encouragement for the amazing runners taking part. We provided boards, markers, and plenty of enthusiasm and soon the space was filled with smiles, laughter, and heartfelt messages of support.

Of course, Colleen and Aaron couldn’t resist joining in themselves — crafting their own signs and cheering on everyone who passed by. It was such a joy to witness the determination, spirit, and teamwork that filled the streets that day.

Congratulations to all the runners ! Your dedication, months of training, and perseverance truly inspired us. You reminded us what community, courage, and commitment look like in motion. 👍

Act #69 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness - Walking for Our Seniors 👣

We were so proud to join this year’s Annual Cardinal Walkathon for Seniors in support of the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, with families, friends, and community members walking side by side. Jimmy, his wife, and their two little ones joined in the fun — along with Katherine Mamalyga from our Cardinal team — making it a truly multigenerational walk filled with laughter, care, and connection.

For all of us at Cardinal Funeral Home, supporting the Walkathon is something deeply meaningful. Each year, we’re inspired by the incredible sense of community at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre — the families, staff, and volunteers who come together to care for our seniors. It’s a vibrant reminder of how compassion and generosity can multiply when we walk together toward a shared purpose.

That’s why we’re thrilled to continue the Cardinal Family Matching Gift Challenge, doubling every donation up to $20,000 to strengthen care programs and services for seniors in our community. Your kindness truly goes twice as far. 🙌

Fundraising continues until the end of October — we’re so close to reaching our goal! 💙

Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, and showed their support — this community is what kindness looks like in action. 💛

Act #68 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness – A Thousand Pennies for a Thousand Followers! 💙💛

We recently surpassed 1,000 followers on Facebook, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the support, kindness, and connection we’ve built with our community over the years. To celebrate this milestone, we’re turning it into another Act of Kindness!

In honour of our 1,000 followers, we’ll be donating 1,000 pennies ($100) to a local charity — but we’d like you to help us decide where it goes!

Here’s how you can take part:
1️⃣ Comment below with the name of a charity you’d like us to support.
2️⃣ Like someone else’s comment if you want to vote for their suggestion.

At 5 p.m. on Friday, October 24th, we’ll tally up the votes and donate our thousand pennies to the charity with the most likes. 💰

It’s our way of saying thank you for helping us grow our community — one follower, one act, and one kind gesture at a time.

Let’s make this milestone matter together! 🕊️

Act #67 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness – Supporting the Women’s Circle of St. Demetrius Church 🇺🇦✝️

We were honoured to support the Women’s Circle at St. Demetrius the Great Martyr Parish in their inspiring effort to hand-embroider crosses for Ukrainian soldiers fighting for freedom and peace.

Each cross, measuring just under two inches, carries deep spiritual meaning — they’re blessed by parish priests and sent to Ukraine, where soldiers wear them close to their hearts as a source of courage, comfort, and faith on the frontlines. The group’s goal is to create 1,000 crosses, each paired with a prayer card offering strength and hope to those defending their nation.

To help with supplies, we donated a Michaels gift card to the Women’s Circle, presented by our very own Katherine Mamalyga, a proud member of the group. Katherine is pictured here presenting the card to Darlene (Darka) Chandon, the group’s leader.

The photos you see were taken during one of the group’s previous summer gatherings, where the ladies came together to knit, stitch, and share in the same spirit of compassion that continues to guide their efforts today.

We’re truly inspired by the devotion of these women — their hands create, but their hearts give hope. 💛💙

📸 Here’s a glimpse of this beautiful act of faith and kindness in action.

Act #66 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness – “Bee Prepared” Estate Planning Seminar 🐝📋

Last week, on October 1st — National Seniors Day, we were honoured to host a free estate planning seminar at the Grenadier Cafe in High Park.

The event, aptly titled “Bee Prepared”, welcomed nearly 50 attendees for an informative afternoon focused on the importance of planning ahead. Our guest speaker, Gordon from the Canadian Preplanning Council, shared valuable insights on what to consider when thinking about estate planning, executor protection and how pre-planning a funeral can be one of the most thoughtful and reassuring gifts you can leave your loved ones.

The afternoon was filled with great questions, meaningful discussions, and a delicious meal to close out the event. We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us for this special day of learning, connection, and preparation.

📸 Here are a few photos from the event — thank you to all who attended and helped make it such a success!

Act #65 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness — Honouring World Alzheimer’s Day

In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Day (September 21), we’re making a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto in support of research, care, and awareness.

Here’s why this cause is so important:

- Over 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

- In Canada, close to 487,000 people aged 65 and older had a diagnosed form of dementia between April 2022 and March 2023.

- As our population ages, the impact and cost of dementia are only expected to grow.

We believe in the power of compassion, community, and investing in a future where those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia can live with dignity and support.

We encourage you to consider supporting organizations like the Alzheimer Society of Toronto — whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness. Together, we can help work toward a world with better care, stronger research, and, ultimately, a cure.

Act #64 of Our 100 Acts of Kindness – Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival 🇺🇦🎉

This past weekend we were proud to once again sponsor and take part in the BWV Toronto Ukrainian Festival—a celebration of culture, community, and tradition that we’ve been supporting for many years.

Our booth was buzzing with activity as we handed out glasses cleaner kits and trezubs to festival-goers who stopped by to say hello. We also held a couple of fun contests, including a raffle for a pair of Toronto Maple Leafs tickets (congratulations to our winner, Andriana K.!) and a LEGO jar challenge, with prizes for those who guessed the closest number of pieces. 🧱✨

It’s always an honour to support the Ukrainian community here in Toronto, and this festival continues to be such a meaningful way to come together.

📸 Here are some photos of our team and the fun we had at this year’s festival!
