Our mission is to care for our patients and their families when it matters most. Our values are: excellence, collaboration, accountability, respect and engagement. From our beginnings as a hospital for Canadian veterans, Sunnybrook has flourished into a fully affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto, evolving to meet the needs of our growing community. Today, with 1.3 million patient visits each year, Sunnybrook has established itself across three campuses and is home to Canada's largest trauma centre. Sunnybrook's groundbreaking research changes the way patients are treated around the world. Our over 200 scientists and clinician-scientists conduct more than $100 million of breakthrough research each year. Tomorrow, we will discover ways to treat the untreatable.

Today is , and sleep plays a critical role in our overall physical and mental well-being.

Located in Sunnybrook's Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre, the Sleep Laboratory, Sleep Medicine Clinic and Ontario’s first Circadian Sleep Centre are advancing care for people living with sleep and circadian disorders. With a multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art testing, clinicians are improving diagnosis and personalized treatments to help patients reclaim rest and improve their quality of life.

“The specialized centre will allow us to control all the senses for days at a time, helping patients retrain their circadian rhythm in a safe environment,” says Dr. Mark Boulos, a Stroke and Sleep Neurologist in the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program and Medical Lead of the Sunnybrook Sleep Laboratory.

For most patients, their care needs don’t end after discharge from the Emergency Department. Yet without access to a primary care provider, follow-up care is virtually out of reach.

Whether it’s a lingering cough or prescription refill, without primary care, more and more patients are accessing Emergency Departments as a last resort for care.

To fill this gap, we created the Bridging Care Clinic, a space at Sunnybrook that offers follow-up care and multidisciplinary support to patients without primary care providers.

“We asked ourselves how we could address the acute reason patients came to the hospital, help them catch up on the care they needed, and, ideally, connect them to a medical home,” said Dr. Karen Fleming, Chief of Family & Community Medicine at Sunnybrook.

Since opening, the clinic has expanded to include social work, occupational therapy, and nursing, while attaching more than 115 patients to primary care providers in their communities.

After a devastating cycling crash in July 2024, Nick arrived at Sunnybrook by ambulance with multiple spine fractures, six broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a concussion. Following spinal surgery and a stay in the intensive care unit, he began the long road to recovery — supported by the team at the Jennifer Tory Trauma Recovery Clinic.

At the clinic, Nick worked with Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist Dr. Simritpal Malhi to manage PTSD and concussion symptoms after his injuries. Through individual and group support, he learned strategies to overcome the fear of returning to cycling and connected with another patient who understood what he had been through.

Today, Nick is back on the road racing competitively. He credits the teams at Sunnybrook for supporting him every step of the way. Read his full story: https://sunnybrook.ca/2026/03/sunnybrook-was-there-for-me-at-every-point-of-my-recovery/

This week, in celebration of , we hosted an Indigenous Women in Health Care panel discussion.

General internal medicine physicians Dr. Jessie Baptiste, registered social workers Joanna Vautour, and Indigenous patient navigators Kathy MacLeod-Beaver and Victoria Manitowabi joined us to discuss the importance of Indigenous perspectives in health care.

The panel centred Indigenous women as leaders, partners and knowledge holders, whose lived experiences are helping organizations move beyond intention to ensure patient care is safe, respectful, culturally sound and equitable for all.

Thank you to the Department of Equity and Social Accountability for putting this exciting panel together and to all Sunnybrookers who came out to support Indigenous women in health care.

As Canada’s climate warms, health-care institutions are challenged not only with addressing the growing needs of patients but also the environmental footprint that comes with it.

Recognized for over a decade as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers, we are committed to advancing sustainability and helping build a greener health-care system.

Our Green Task Force is leading this work. This team of dedicated volunteers focuses on delivering tangible results that strengthen Sunnybrook’s environmental stewardship and create lasting impact.

March is , and at Sunnybrook, teams are expanding access to deep brain stimulation (DBS) for people living with advanced Parkinson’s disease. Through the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program and the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation, clinicians deliver this standard of care, which targets specific areas of the brain to interrupt the signals that cause tremors, stiffness and other symptoms.

DBS implants electrodes in precise brain regions to deliver mild electrical impulses that disrupt abnormal activity. Our new 7-Tesla MRI helps guide these procedures with remarkable detail. “While it is an invasive treatment for Parkinson’s disease, it is also the most targeted and precise,” says Dr. Ben Davidson. “The result is that symptoms are more manageable for longer, dramatically improving the quality of life of patients living with advanced Parkinson’s disease.”

As Ontario’s population ages and demand grows, Sunnybrook is working with partners across the GTA to reduce wait times and connect more patients to the precision care they need.

“Fourteen years ago, my life—and my son’s life—were saved at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Every year, February 12th arrives, and every year my heart remembers.”

In 2012, Natalie Rossi was 36 weeks pregnant with her fourth child when she became critically ill. What she thought was a sore throat and fever quickly escalated. Untreated strep throat turned into bacterial meningitis, and her body began to shut down.

The team in our DAN Women & Babies Program intubated Natalie immediately and delivered her son. Doctors placed her in a medically induced coma for six days while her body fought to recover.

With the support of her family, friends and Sunnybrook team, Natalie survived and healed.

We’re taking a look back at some of the moments from our Black History Month celebrations.

This month, Sunnybrook staff had the chance to learn to play the drums, discuss health disparities affecting the Black community, play weekly trivia, and eat some delicious Jamaican patties.

Thank you to our Black History Month Planning Committee for bringing these events to life and to all those who participated in this year’s events.

Jan Linton lived with knee pain for years but pushed through to stay active, playing baseball, curling and pickleball. When the pain became unmanageable, she stopped playing, completed a local assessment and chose full replacements for both knees.

Jan had her first surgery at Sunnybrook's Holland Centre just five weeks after her referral. Through the Toronto Regional Arthroplasty Collaborative (TRAC), teams are reducing wait times for hip and knee replacements across Ontario.

“Every appointment I attended at the Holland Centre, I worked with a team that I could feel was dedicated to my success,” explains Jan. “Three months after my first surgery, while at my post-op appointment, I was can-can kicking into Dr. Nousiainen’s office!”

Stan Byrne, a healthy 49-year-old mother of two, headed out for an evening run when she started to feel short of breath and chest pain. She thought, “I’m just tired, or getting a cold.” In reality, she was having a heart attack.

Blood tests in the emergency department revealed she had experienced Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) — an uncommon and underdiagnosed condition.

SCAD differs from a typical heart attack. It occurs when a coronary artery tears or bleeds within the artery wall, blocking blood flow to the heart and triggering a heart attack.

With daily medication, Stan has returned to her normal routine and continues caring for her young children. Read more about her journey and learn more about SCAD: https://sunnybrook.ca/2026/02/young-and-fit-like-stan-you-could-still-experience-an-uncommon-heart-attack-called-scad/

Thanks to a transformational $10M gift from Brian Reeve and his family, Sunnybrook's Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program is expanding access to specialized care for people living with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders. This commitment will accelerate the next phase of growth for Sunnybrook’s Frederick W. Thompson Anxiety Disorders Centre, including the creation of the Reeve OCD Centre – a new and permanent home for OCD care at Sunnybrook’s Bayview campus. The expansion will support more timely access to intensive treatment for the estimated 400,000 Canadians living with severe OCD and related disorders, and strengthen collaboration across clinical and research teams.

The gift will also invest in the future through Reeve OCD Fellowships and an endowed OCD Chair, training the next generation of OCD clinicians and researchers.
