College of Nurses of Ontario

College of Nurses of Ontario As the governing body for Ontario's 180,000+ nurses, we register nurses, help them maintain competence, and set and enforce practice standards.

We partner with employers, educators and government so that all Ontarians benefit from safe nursing care. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body for Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting safe nursing practice. CNO fulfils its role by:
*establishing requirements for entry to practice
*articulating and promoting practice standards
*administering its Quality Assurance Program
*enforcing standards of practice and conduct

CNO also supports the regulation of nursing in the public interest by:
*participating in the legislative process
*sharing statistical information about Ontario’s nurses

CNO works in partnership with employers, educators and government so that everyone in Ontario benefits from quality nursing services. CNO aims to prevent harm by identifying potential sources and addressing them before they can negatively impact the public. It's ! Put your documentation knowledge to the test.

Nurses must make and keep timely and accurate records of the care they provide. Whether it's done on paper, electronically or in another format, documentation is a crucial element of nursing practice. It helps monitor a patient's progress and communicates with other care providers.

Today we celebrate international students, including the thousands of internationally educated nurses (IENs) who bring their skills, experience and dedication to nursing in Ontario.

So far this year, nearly one-third of all new nurses registered in Ontario were educated outside of Canada. That's over 3,900 IENs joining the profession and helping meet the health care needs of communities across the province.

To all IENs: thank you for choosing nursing, for choosing Ontario and for enriching the profession with your global perspective.

We're happy to share that over 5,500 people have become nurses through the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP)!

Through supervised practice, this program lets applicants meet their evidence of practice and language proficiency requirements. SPEP helps qualified nurses begin their careers in Ontario with confidence, supporting a strong, safe and competent nursing workforce.

Last month, several CNO staff attended the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion's (CCDI) “Sparking the collective: transdisciplinary approaches to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA)” event at CAMH.

We explored how to put DEIA values into practice by bringing lived experience, equity lenses and critical perspectives to the table.

When it comes to health equity, CNO recognizes the barriers and bias that exist. As a leader in health regulation, we are committed to fostering diverse, equitable and inclusive spaces for all. Sessions like this strengthen that commitment by helping us reflect, learn and take tangible steps toward transformational change.

On Remembrance Day, we honour the courage and compassion of Canadian nurses who served in times of war.

From the North-West Rebellion to the World Wars and beyond, nurses, known as “Nursing Sisters,” were among the first women to serve officially in Canada’s military. They cared for wounded soldiers in hospitals, field stations, and even near the front lines.

➡️ In WWI, over 2,800 nurses earned the nickname “Bluebirds” for their blue uniforms and white veils.
➡️ By WWII, more than 4,400 nursing sisters had served, with many making the ultimate sacrifice.

Their legacy lives on in today’s nurses, who continue to serve with professionalism, compassion and courage, whether in the Canadian Armed Forces or in communities across Ontario.

Today, we remember their service. We honour their strength and we thank them.
