To wrap up this year's , we must pay tribute to the legacy of Lillie Johnson, a pioneering nurse and health advocate, who passed away in August 2025 at the incredible age of 103.

Johnson was born in Jamaica in 1922 and immigrated to Toronto in 1960, where she began working for the Victorian Order of Nurses. As an already experienced nurse, midwife and teacher, she went on to become the first Black Director of Public Health in Ontario and founded the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario in 1981.

She also co-founded the TAIBU Community Health Centre which provides multidisciplinary, culturally appropriate primary health care to Black communities in the GTA.

She has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Order of Ontario.

Dr. Anderson Ruffin Abbott was the first Canadian-born Black person to graduate from medical school in 1861. During the American Civil War, he served as a civilian surgeon at the Contraband Hospital in Washington, DC, under the leadership of Alexander Augusta, and later other hospitals in Washington. He and Augusta became well known enough to be invited to a White House function and met President Lincoln.

Returning to Canada in 1866, Dr. Abbott went on to practice in Kent County, Dundas, Oakville and Toronto. He eventually became surgeon-in-chief of Provident Hospital, a training hospital for Black nurses in Chicago, later becoming the medical superintendent.

He was also a public advocate for integrated schools and, after returning to Toronto in 1897, he spent his later years writing on Black history and other topics.

Taking a step off the health care path, let's talk about the namesake of Toronto's Hubbard Park and the recently renamed atrium of George Brown Polytechnic's Chef School.

Born to American slaves who settled in Toronto after being freed, William Peyton Hubbard grew up to become Toronto’s first Black elected official in 1894, first serving as an alderman (equivalent to a city councillor)and eventually serving as controller and periodically as acting mayor.

Throughout his political career, he advocated for public ownership of essential services and worked to advance fairness and inclusion for minorities. He was instrumental in placing Toronto’s hydroelectric system in public ownership.

But before that, he was a baker who specialized in cakes and invented the Portable Hubbard Oven!
