You might not know it but the oral rest posture of a baby 👶🏼 can have a profound affect on their facial and oral development, & ultimately their quality of life!

One of the main goals of correct oral rest posture and jaw development is lip seal at rest.

Some babies naturally tend to close their mouths during rest and sleep better than others. But you can also encourage your little one to do this! By doing this at such an early stage, this actually helps them continue to do it subconsciously.

Science tells us that by repeatedly gently closing babies mouth after feeding and during sleep, you are training the motor areas of the brain 🧠 that control these movements.

This creates new neural pathways, called neuroplasticity. Basically it is possible to train the brain!

Having a sealed lip posture for a baby is important for jaw development as the tongue sits against particular nerves high in the palate activating important growth signals to fire. This is especially important when babies are born with a ‘high palate’.

It also encourages correct swallowing patterns naturally, which affect the way the orofacial muscles develop - important for toothy peg positioning!

And lastly, and this is a big one for me, it helps with saliva control. Time and time again I hear mothers being told that breastfeeding 🤱🏼 or formula feeding is causing their child’s tooth decay. And that they should stop. THIS IS WRONG! Did I make myself clear enough? 🤪 If you properly understand how tooth decay ACTUALLY works, you know that this simply isn’t true. However it is multi factorial, of course. (I’ll go into more depth on this topic in a future post).

A big factor contributing to this is lip seal and saliva control - saliva is used to buffer the acidity, control and manage the oral microbiome and help with oral clearance - clearing excess milk from the teeth.

Did you know a baby with a ‘high palate’? Does your baby have a good natural resting posture? I’d love to hear some stories and feedback!

Also, please tag any Mummy friends you think would benefit from this! 💗

Got a question? Feel free to ask! 🤘🏻
