Heading for a medical induction to birth your baby?

Top tip: plan for a long process, and don’t expect to be comfortable in triage.

Partners: pack an air mattress and cozy clothing. Prepare for food for yourself and your loved one (hospital food is never enough and usually not very good).

Don’t bring all your things into triage, but have it all with you in the car.

Be prepared to stay or go - don’t be too attached to a strict timeline or “plan”.

Dare to be different!!! You can choose things that are right for you. You consent to everything first!

PART 7: Final thoughts on the Ob Anesthesia conference - Failed epidurals.

Sometimes epidurals doesn’t work perfectly, and this could be for many reasons.

Wanting an epidural, going through the procedure AND THEN HAVING IT NOT WORK REALLY SUCKS.

Makes you wish you didn’t bother with it? Or maybe it works a bit, or maybe it takes you off your OG plan altogether.

If your plan is to have an epidural, talk to your provider about when it’s best to get it.

If your plan is NO epidural, then plan for other coping tools:
💌 HIRE A DOULA
💌 TAKE A (NON-HOSPITAL) CHILDBIRTH CLASS
💌 USE A TENS MACHINE
💌 LABOUR IN WATER
💌 BIRTH AT HOME / BIRTH CENTRE
💌 SURROUND YOURSELF WITH BIRTH STORIES LIKE THE KIND YOU WANT TO HAVE

The best made plans are bound to change of course, but where would we be without a starting point? And then do your best 🙌🏼🔥

This is the final video in this series. Did you watch them all? Comment below and help me keep the conversation on labour analgesia going!!

Part 6 of the UofT Obstetrical Anesthesia conference! HAVING A PRE-LABOUR CONSULT WITH THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST.

It’s a particularly good idea for people with:
↪️ elevated BMI
↪️ curvatures in the spine
↪️concerns about opiates
↪️concerns about needles
↪️ anyone AVOIDING EPIDURALS.

That’s right, if you DON’T want an epidural, it might be a good idea to talk to a dr about what is involved so you’re clear on what and why you’re avoiding it, and some preparation for what to expect if you change your mind in labour.

People change their minds a lot about epidurals once they’re on the path and feeling the feels of labour.

95% of those of you birthing in a Toronto hospital will choose an epidural. I don’t think 95% of people go into the process planning for an epidural.

Some of those folks will be upset with themselves or the providers and I think * some of that might be allievated with a pre-consult.

Share your experiences with anesthesia consults or pain management in labour below 👇🏼

PART 5: Make a birth plan.

Yes it’s worth doing, no labour doesn’t always go to plan but the communication still makes a difference for how things happen in your birth.

Nurses and doctors do read the plans. And it gives them pause to know a person has made thoughtful consideration for their wishes and what they are willing to consent to with best circumstances.

A birth plan/preferences/wishes doesn’t mean you can’t change your mind. It gives you a roadmap of where to start.

“But we got nothing that was on the birth plan”. Perhaps that is the outcome, but imagine without the plan, would you have had the questions and considerations met without it? Did it help you organize your ideas and research ahead of time?

Part 4: Language matters. Avoiding triggers can be done by staying professional, being mindful of interactions and how they’re perceived and received.

I noticed on one slide, events potentially leading a person to have a traumatic birth mention “perceived pressure” for induction or epidural.

Well now, where would that “perceived” pressure have come from? What makes it real vs perceived?

Until doctors can be Frank with one another that they’re perpetuating harm in some births, I don’t think we will see change. Sorry, accountability needed.

Without accountability from the root of the birth room trauma, advocating for yourself and your family is your best opportunity for having your birth be your own best case scene. Choose your venue and team with your best case in mind.

Bored of my recaps yet? I have 3 more videos to share in this series.
