Working at a desk? Here are some ways you can reduce or avoid repetitive strain injury (RSI) at your workstation:

1. Adjust your chair: Your shoulders and lower back should rest comfortably against the backrest, thighs parallel to the floor, with knees inline or slightly lower than your hips.

2. Adjust your monitor - Position your computer screen directly in front of you with the top line of text at eye level. This helps to keep your neck in a neutral position while you work.

3. Adjust your mouse/keyboard - Position your keyboard and mouse so that your arms are relaxed and your wrists are straight. Place them high enough that your elbows rest at your sides, and forearms sit parallel to the floor.

4. Keep moving - Avoid sitting in one position for too long. Move frequently and take breaks to stretch, stand, and walk around.

5. Visit your chiropractor - Chiropractors are spine, muscle and joint experts. They can provide education, advice, and hands-on treatment to help you avoid or manage pain.

Playing a winter sport is a great way to stay active and make the best of the cold weather. We’ve put together a few tips to help you prioritize helmet safety when engaging in more physically demanding activities such as snowboarding and hockey.

These are great tips to help keep our kids safe while setting great examples and protecting our heads too!

1️⃣ CHOOSE THE RIGHT HELMET. Snowboarding, skiing or skating? Get the right helmet for your sport.
2️⃣ REPLACE AFTER A CRASH. A crash means it’s time for a new helmet, even if it looks fine.
3️⃣ AVOID SECOND-HAND. If it’s damaged or a few years old, play it safe and buy a new one.
4️⃣ LOOK AT THE SAFETY LABELS. Helmets with certification labels (e.g. CSA, HECC, CE) meet safety standards in their respective jurisdictions. Look for the manufacturing date to determine the age of the helmet.
5️⃣ MAKE SURE IT FITS PROPERLY. If the chin strap is too loose or the helmet moves or sags to the back of your head, it won’t protect you.
6️⃣ VISIT YOUR CHIROPRACTOR. Many top professional athletes have a team chiropractor. Find out how they can help you prevent or manage spine, muscle and joint injuries.

In Ontario, you can visit a chiropractor without a referral from a family physician or other health care professional.

OCA members: The next GLA:D Back clinician training course is being offered virtually March 7-8, 2026.

Day 1️⃣: Saturday, March 7, 2026 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST
Day 2️⃣: Sunday, March 8, 2026 - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST

The purpose of GLA:D Back is to help patients better manage persistent and/or recurrent low back pain themselves through a well-described and structured treatment program. The patient program includes structured patient education sessions and supervised exercise sessions over 7 weeks, a pre- and post-program assessment, and data registration. These components are recommended as first-line interventions in several international guidelines based on expert reviews of hundreds of randomized controlled trials. Data from the program is entered in a secure clinical registry so that together, new knowledge about chronic low back pain is created and GLA:D Back can be continuously improved.

Details and Registration are available at: https://www.gladback.ca/clinician-training

Friendly reminder on ice safety! Winter weather in Ontario has its ups and downs. Stay on your feet with these non-slip tips!

1. WALK LIKE A PENGUIN. The penguin waddle helps you keep a centre of gravity over the front leg as you step. Short strides also help keep your centre of gravity.

2. KEEP WALKWAYS CLEAR. Shovel snow and scrape ice as soon as possible. Use ice melt product or sand on walkways to provide foot traction and to avoid ice forming.

3. TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS. Be extra cautious walking after a storm. Tap your foot on potentially icy areas to see if it is slippery. Stay steady by wearing proper winter footwear.

4. LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD. Carry fewer bags on snowy days to avoid throwing off your balance and keep your hands free while walking.

5. BOOST BALANCE WITH EXERCISE. Exercise is an ideal way to help you stay safely on your feet. It helps improve balance, mobility and strength.

6. VISIT YOUR CHIROPRACTOR. If you fall, visit your chiropractor. They’ll help you get back to doing the things you love, and work with your care team to help prevent future falls.

In Ontario, you can visit a chiropractor without a referral from a family physician or other health care professional. Find an Ontario chiropractor at www.chiropractic.on.ca
