Youthful Cities

Youthful Cities Leading a unique urban regeneration towards youthfulness. YouthfulCities is a global initiative to rank the world’s top 100 cities from a youth perspective. Why?

And lead a unique urban regeneration in the process. Simply put, cities are full of youth. Youth are at the center of urbanization. They build a city’s competitive edge, stimulate development and find new solutions. They are connectors. They are curious. They are inventive. They are dynamic. They are the future of cities. In 2012 we discovered two amazing stats that set our social venture in motion: 50 per cent of the world's population is under 30 years of age and 50 per cent of the world's population now live in cities. The future of the world will be determined by the progression of urbanization as it is molded by youth. While this provides strong motivation for cities to maximize the potential of youth, their opinions are often unrecognized. There are countless indexes and rankings of cities, but none with a youth perspective. We decided to find out what would happen if we were able to inspire and engage thousands of young people to re-imagine the places where they live, work and play. So... YouthfulCities was born! Because we believe that youth are good for cities and cities are good for youth.

Young people in Canada are worried about AI.

According to our research, 49% of Black youth and 43% of racialized youth fear their jobs will be eliminated by AI within a decade, compared to 33% of white youth. Youth employed in trades, agriculture, and manufacturing perceive a greater risk.

🎬 So how do we create sustainable work ecosystems in the evolving AI landscape? Take action.

Young people are, or will be, the most impacted by AI. Here's your chance to shape policy not just as stakeholders, but as co-designers. Lots of options for action in this post. The time is now.

💪 AI may shape the future, but it is young people who will shape AI.

We know that working together is the only way to solve the housing crisis. Young people have unique needs and are hit hard by the lack of affordable options. Together with groups like Toboggan Flats we had started a national housing coalition last year and would love to join forces to collaborate on this idea!

🇨🇦 Big win for Canada! Our sister org, Toboggan Flats, just won the Global Coliving Award for Best Emerging Concept — putting Canadian coliving on the world stage. 🏡✨

At Youthful Cities, our data tells us what youth already know:
🏠 Affordable housing feels out of reach — 78% of young Canadians say the cost of rent is their biggest barrier to independence.
💬 And 1 in 3 youth say loneliness and mental health challenges are made worse by the housing crisis.

That’s why concepts like Toboggan Flats matter.
They’re turning empty offices → vibrant communities, creating shared, affordable, connected living — where youth can thrive together.

Let’s go, Canada! 💪🇨🇦

We’re beyond thrilled to share that Toboggan Flats has won the Emerging Coliving Concept Award at the 2025 Global Coliving awards! 🇨🇦 From Canada to the coliving community worldwide—thank you for believing in the future we’re building. ❤️🛷

58% of youth respondents cite affordability as their top housing consideration. Our housing study indicates that not everyone needs to jump into home ownership or be quite so isolated. There's a middle ground where we surround our youthful selves with everything we want: friends, fun, and opportunity. Since 82% of youth indicate interest in coliving, we're hoping that initiatives like the Toboggan Flats coliving conversions will encourage Canada to get some affordable housing available for young people SOON.

How does the city make you feel about your future?

Youthful Cities hosted an activation as part of Dress for Success Toronto’s Youth Employment Summit. We took a data driven approach to employment challenges young people face, shared experiences with applying for jobs, concerns about the future of employment, and talked more about the changes that young people want to see from employers, and local industries.

Take a look at the numbers here, and see what youth have to say.

Thank you to for hosting us!
