A heads up to those of you who are pregnant or have friends or family who are - new research questions the safety of Tylenol. It was previously recommended to be safe for pain and fever during pregnancy, but in fact it may be harmful for male babies.

Even more reason to consider natural alternatives like chiropractic, acupuncture and massage (besides the fact they're likely to do a better job helping those aches & pains!)

I see a lot of very active children in my practice with sports related injuries. This article does a good job at highlighting what some of the research suggests we do to help avoid overuse injuries - here are my main takeaways:
1. Play a variety of sports as they provide different challenges and skill sets. Also have 2-3 months in which they take a break away from their major sport in a year.
2. The number of hours they spend playing in sport per week, should be less than their age (a tough one for most young athletes!)
3. Take one to two days off per week for both physical and psychological recovery (yes kids get very stressed about sports)

Children who specialize in a single sport too early and spend too much time playing it risk overuse injuries, experts say. How to set age-specific time limits.

Good read on a PREVENTABLE issue that causes serious mortality in people older than 75

After a fall, life is upended in an instant — a sudden loss of independence, an awkward reliance on family and friends, and a new level of fear for those who fall, and their contemporaries.

I have a version of this conversation with patients on almost a daily basis. Recovery is not negotiable. Stress (exercise, life, etc) is cumulative. We need to balance it with proper recovery (rest, nutrition, etc) http://jamesclear.com/cumulative-stress

Just because you lower cholesterol, doesn’t necessarily mean you lower the risk of a heart attack. In fact, half of heart attack victims have normal levels of cholesterol. Cholesterol is often blamed - partially because we have a group of drugs that effectively lowers cholesterol - but with great side effects. Perhaps we should focus elsewhere? Is fish oil bad for you? I often recommend omega 3 supplements to my patients as they act as a good natural anti-inflammatory (among other health benefits). A recent "study" got a lot of press when it questioned the need and safety of fish oils. Here's a great article that lets you know what the research really says (hint: fish oil is still good for you!)

Everyone knows that fish oil is awesome. It’s full of omega-3 fatty acids, which do so many fantastic things in the body. Indeed, for the last few years almost every health expert has recommended a varied intake of omega-3 fats as well as fish oil supplementation. However, lately, fish oil has come…

Interesting research of the day: a giraffe was suffering from neck spasms and was treated successfully by a specially trained chiropractor. You'll be amazed to know that giraffe's actually have the same number of neck bones as we do - they're just really big! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23505724
