Maria, a high school senior looking forward to prom and graduation, fainted during a routine day. The event led to cardiac testing and eventually, a diagnosis of a heart tumour.

Maria needed a complex surgery that required opening her chest and removing a mass from her heart without damaging vital structures and valves. Only two cardiac surgeons in the world could perform this rare procedure. The surgery was completed by Dr. Robert Cusimano and his team at UHN’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.

Maria has quickly recovered, and the lifesaving surgery has inspired to pursue a career as a cardiac perfusionist to help others. Read her story here: https://bit.ly/4p3pUSU

We are proud to partner with Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on their upcoming Cardiovascular Surgery Program, the first of its kind in Northwestern Ontario.

The program, developed with UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, will improve access to surgical care, reduce wait times, and lead to better outcomes for cardiac patients across the region. It will allow patients to receive urgent and elective procedures in Northwestern Ontario, eliminating the need for long-distance travel to southern Ontario for approximately 300 patients every year.

Congratulations to Melanie and the late Peter Munk and the Peter and Melanie Munk Charitable Foundation on being named inaugural recipients of the UHN Mission Legacy Awards!

A new era in cardio and vascular care in Canada began in 1993 with a gift to UHN from Melanie and the late Peter Munk. This gift first established the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN’s Toronto General Hospital. Since then, their total contributions to the UHN Foundation toward cardiovascular care, research and education have surpassed $187 million.
