Does your training load greatly outweigh the capacity of your tissues to adapt and recover from your training??

This is a common theme among many athletes. Their training has exceeded what their body can cope with and is usually coupled with an under appreciation of recovery factors like sleep, nutrition, hydration and relaxation.
The result??
Something hurts!! 🤕

A combination of training modification and increasing your tissue’s ability to manage forces - through osteopathy and strength & conditioning can help in recovery as well as prevention from injury. ☺️

We often think of pain in very simple terms.
Bad posture = back pain.
Slept funny = neck pain.
But pain is usually a much more complex issue involving many different factors such as.
Activity levels.
Sleep.
Stress.
Age.
Diet.
Beliefs about pain.
Altered sensory processing.
And many others

This metamodel created by a panel of 27 experts from the North American spine society does a great job of illustrating the many factors that can contribute to low back pain and those factors interactions with each other.

Effective treatment for back pain requires an individualized approach and should address the factors (illustrated above) that may be contributing to an individual’s symptoms.

Stress is a natural part of life and short bouts of stress with adequate recovery is how we adapt, learn and get stronger.

Chronic unremitting stress, however affects the whole body and can negatively impact;
Immune function.
Concentration levels.
Cravings for food
Metabolism.
Digestion
Pain/sensitivity levels
S*x drive.

The first step in reducing stress is identifying where it’s coming from.

Removing stress altogether is unrealistic but there are many ways to reduce it.

Use the chart above to determine where your stress is coming from and brainstorm a few ways to reduce stress in those areas.

Research shows our posture doesn’t play as big a role as most people would think in causing pain we may be experiencing.

Perfect posture doesn’t guarantee being pain free.

Posture can play a role and if changing the way we sit, stand or move makes us feel better it’s a good idea to make those changes.

But pain is often caused by much more than just posture alone and includes cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social components.

The reality is, there is no perfect posture. Dynamic posture is best! Which means keep moving! We weren’t designed to sit for long periods. So take frequent breaks from you desk. Setting an alarm to to remind you to take short breaks every 30mins - 1hr can be helpful.

Osteopaths will assess many different factors including posture that influence and contribute to your pain or injury and work out a treatment plan that best suits you! 😊

The benefits of exercise are numerous and well documented.

Improve immune function.
Improve sleep quality😴.
Manage blood sugar effectively.
Reduce chronic pain.
Reduce risk of dementia.
Not to mention just making you feel good.

Exercise doesn’t have to be going to the gym and lifting weights or spin class 3x a week. Exercise in its most sustainable form is any physical activity you enjoy, such as dancing, gardening, hiking, swimming, playing sports ⚽️ or any hobby that gets you moving!

And it’s definitely more enjoyable when you have a good exercise buddy 😊

as Covid-19 variants continue to arise and evade vaccination efficacy, it is becoming clear that this virus may be around longer than we would all hope. Is there anything we can do that will reduce our chances of a serious, medical attention requiring, infection and allow us to get back to normalcy?

Feeling fearful about the current rise in Covid cases or the emergence of new variants??
As of Feb 2021 more than 87,000 papers had been published on Covid-19. That’s approximately 238 papers published each day since the start of the pandemic!!!
We know A LOT about this virus. Particularly in regards to what makes us more susceptible to a severe infection and what makes us more resilient to it.
Check out the new post on developing resilience to Covid-19 and its variants (link in bio) and empower yourself with evidence based strategies that reduce the likelihood of severe viral infection rather than feeling fearful or powerless. 😊

Nice to see a world class athlete show what he really thinks about soft drinks place in sports.

Coca Cola spends millions of $£€ every year trying to convince people that a beverage with zero nutritional value will improve their life.

They are also the Number 1 plastic polluter on the planet. Coke is the most littered bottle in 37 counties, out of 51 surveyed.

I hope kids around the world can see this and realize that a beverage containing colorings, flavorings, caffeine, and 9 teaspoons of sugar!!! has no place in anyone’s diet let alone elite sports!

Gratitude 🙏

Gratitude is one of the strongest predictors of happiness.

A 2003 study compared the well-being of participants who kept a weekly list of things they were grateful for to participants who kept a list of things that irritated them.

After two weeks the grateful participants were happier, more positive, more socially courageous, more likely to help others, more emotionally open and even slept better!

Gratitude is a seriously powerful tool to increase wellbeing.

Start using it today!!!
Take a few minutes before going to bed to reflect on the positive moments of your day.

Pain lasting longer than 3 months?

This is what is known as persistent or chronic pain.
And a number of commonly used drugs to relieve that pain can do more harm than good 😬

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence which provides guidance on the assessment and management of chronic pain says common pain meds such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, benzodiazepines and opioids show no evidence of improving symptoms and may even cause more harm, including addiction.

Chronic or persistent pain can be difficult to treat and can have a significant impact on an individuals life.

Osteopaths are trained in pain science in addition to having a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology. They can help you understand what is causing your persistent pain and give you treatment and advice to help relieve it. 😊

🍵 Tea is a very important beverage in the UK 🇬🇧
More than 60 billion cups are consumed here each year!!
Unfortunately, if you’re among the 96% of people that choose tea bags over loose leaf you may also be drinking a lot of plastic 🤢.
Several tea bags use polypropylene (sealing plastic) to keep their bags from falling apart in hot water.
Research from McGill university found these bags can leach millions of plastic particles into our tea.
Recently University of Arizona researchers, who examined the organs of 47 deceased bodies, found every organ (100%) contained traces of plastic.
The researchers are not certain about the health implications of these plastics on our health. But I would be willing to guess that its not good.
Ditch the plastic bags and choose loose leaf or go for brands such as or who’s bags don’t contain plastic.
