💥EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN💥
———
Great information from brain and aging expert, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, PhD ().
・・・
In the systematic review cited below, aerobic exercise was found to maintain brain volume in the left hippocampus in 14 different controlled trials suggesting aerobic exercise may prevent brain aging.
The exercise protocols in the 14 trials ranged from walking to jogging to cycling. The duration range was from 6 weeks to 24 months.
Aerobic exercise has been shown to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor, IGF-1, and serotonin in the brain. All of these growth factors play a role in maintaining neurons and neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons) and have been shown to cause exercise-induced neurogenesis in animal studies. Just so many reasons to be physically active!

Meet another one of our brain injury patients. Some of you will remember him from the previous Gene Simmons post. We call him the miracle man for a very good reason. He was a pedestrian stuck by a truck and left for dead. The picture you see has not been photoshopped he was literally missing half of his head. When we first met him the entire hospital trauma team said he would never walk again or talk again they had no positive prognosis for him. He proved them completely wrong. Because he sustained significant frontal lobe damage he does have a filtering issue (reminder to never JUDGE people, you do not know their story). He continues to receive extensive case management, behavioural therapy, physiotherapy, social work and psychological treatment. We are so proud of his accomplishments he means the world to us. He was hospitalized for 6 months straight, when he got discharged he had to wear a helmet for two months until he had bone flap replacement surgery. He had a series of other complications along the way. It has been a long road to say the least but he is proof that miracles do happen.

One of the biggest obstacles in obtaining help for my Mental Disorders was MYSELF. I was a victim of my own stigma. I didn't want people to think I was crazy or weak, so I put it off until my mind and body gave up. I had no choice but to see a psychiatrist and a psychologist. This was the best thing that ever happened to me. They helped pull me out of my self-induced prison and into a path of recovery. I am by no means "cured", I've simply accepted and learned. If you think you need help, please reach out to a professional. If you don't know where to start, DM me and I can try to locate resources in your area. Stay strong my friends 💚

This patient is making a remarkable recovery from an incident called dooring. A lot of people are unaware of what dooring is and it happens quite often especially in a city like Toronto where we have many cyclist. Dooring is a traffic collision in which a cyclist rides into a car door or is struck by a car door that was opened quickly without checking the side mirrors. With summer approaching we urge everyone to be conscious about their surroundings. This type of collision causes serious physical and psychological injuries. 🚲.

This is one of our patients who was a pedestrian struck by a car. He sustained multiple injuries, including fractures to his neck which was treated in a halo vest for three months. Unfortunately this is far from the worst that we have seen happen because of distracted drivers. Nobody deserves this, put your phones down and focus on your driving.
