One person can make a difference.
In 1938 Nicholas Winton, then a stockbroker, was invited to join his friend on a trip to Czechoslovakia. During the trip Winton visited refugee camps that were fulled with people displaced by the N***s — mainly Jewish people and political opponents.
He was shocked by the violence against the Jewish populations of Germany and Austria, and anticipated the N***s regime would continue to take over more of the region, so he decided to take action.
Winton had heard about the Kindertransport, an effort by Jewish organizations in Britain to rescue German and Austrian Jewish children from the N***s. Inspired, he brought together a small group of people who would help him organize and facilitate a similar rescue operation for Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.
Winton petitioned the British government to permit Czech children to enter the UK. Approval was granted on the condition that each child would be placed with a host family who would care for them until age 18, and would provide a £50 financial guarantee (for every child).
With the help of a small team of volunteers, they worked relentlessly to find foster homes for each child, prepare photos and documentation, and raise the funds to help cover travel costs. Winton generously looked after any remaining costs himself.
The first group of children left Prague for London by plane on March 14, 1939. Seven rail transports followed from Prague, via Germany, and arrived in Britain. The last train of children left Prague on August 2, 1939.
Once war was declared in September of 1939, the rescue operation came to a halt.
Winton’s rescue operation rescued at least 669 children. Many of these children never saw their families ever again, as they were murdered by the N***s.
Many of these children, did, however, go on to heal, love, marry, and build beautiful lives and families of their own; all who would not be here today without the bravery, selflessness, action, and commitment of Sir Nicholas Winton.
Like I said… one person can make a difference.
Let it be you.
