Women of childbearing age who are sexually active with men must avoid alcohol unless they always use reliable contraception.
The American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics (ACOG) produces this advert to remind us that alcohol is a teratogen (cause of prenatal damage).
Because at least 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, and many women are unaware they’re pregnant for weeks following conception — a crucial developmental period — both women and men can only ensure that when they have in*******se they must abstain from drinking to prevent the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure from touching their baby. And if they drink, they must properly use birth control to prevent pregnancy.
