Responsibilities:

 Monitor other staff, coordinate and participate in the preparation of high quality food;
 Ensure timely delivery of catering orders;
 Interact with customers in a positive and professional manner;
 Create daily specials in conjunction with the manager;
 Coordinate and participate in cleaning duties throughout the day;
 Assist Manager in placing food & supplies orders;
 Assist Manager in creating menus for catering customers;
 Develop and apply food costing skills in conjunction with the manager;
 Ensure smooth business operations during manager vacations or absences;
 Provide training and support for staff with lived experience;
 Maintain team-oriented, positive and professional relationships with staff;
 Ensure business compliance with municipal regulations for Food Safety and workplace Health and Safety;
 Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

 5+ years’ experience in food service;
 Lived experience and applied understanding of survivor hood, its challenges and opportunities;
 Current Food Safety Certification (or willing to obtain);
 Excellent communication skills;
 Experience cooking in a fast-paced kitchen environment;
 Time-management, organizational, administrative and problem-solving skills;
 Formal culinary training/post-secondary education or equivalent experience an asset;
 Knowledge of Microsoft Office / computer skills an asset;
 Driver’s license an asset.

Parkdale Green Thumb Enterprises is seeking a positive, hard-working and organized person between 18 - 30 years of age to join our team for the summer. PGTE is an award-winning social enterprise that provides Environmentally-friendly Landscaping services to Business Improvement Areas, non-profits and commercial clients in West end and downtown Toronto. We provide employment and training opportunities for people with mental health and addiction issues and/or homelessness. Our mandate is to provide meaningful employment that will benefit our employees both economically and socially, while helping the environment. PGTE focuses on soil health as the key to beautiful, abundant gardens, using only nature-based products for pest control and fertilizing. We encourage our commercial clients to include native plants and pollinator-friendly species to create beautiful, healthy, urban ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Business Improvement Areas / Commercial Gardening: Working on our BIA client sites planting and maintaining seasonal floral displays, perennial gardens and Litter Clean-up during festivals. Environmentally-friendly techniques and products are used for watering, weeding, pruning, deadheading, mulching, and removing litter from the sites. Provide daily updates on site conditions to Supervisor. Support additional garden maintenance as needed.
2. Assist the Business Manager and Site Supervisor as required with general tasks: these can include Greenhouse maintenance (cleaning and ecological pest control), purchasing small supplies, keeping track of inventory, etc.
3. Environmental Special projects support: Working in our Landscaping Social Enterprise Head Office – helping with special projects such as compiling and organizing data (including photos)
connected with PGTE’s environmental initiatives as part of our Climate Action program. Assisting with social media in this area as well.
Desired Qualities:
 A positive, cheerful outlook, keen to learn and to take direction.
 A good communicator with access to a working phone and email.
 Organized and punctual.
 Some experience working in gardens / using organic garden methods.
 A strong interest in plants and love of being outdoors in any weather.
 You must enjoy teamwork and being part of a busy, hard-working crew at the height of summer.
 Holding a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record is a very strong asset! Please mention in your application.
Qualifications and Requirements:
 Be physically able to lift soil bags, use shovels, push a full wheelbarrow, walk 2 km easily.
 Must be between 18 and 30 years of age due to funding requirements.
 Must be Canadian citizen.
 Preferred post-secondary student in final year of studies or recently graduated (2019).
 We welcome students with experience in these fields: Horticultural technician program; Environmental landscape diploma; Landscape technician; Environmental studies; Non-profit or Business administration program.
 Relevant related work experience very welcome!
We offer:
 Fixed-term 8-week full-time position (35 hours/week) at $15/hour with possibility of extension part-time, after end of summer position.
 As part of our social enterprise mandate, we give priority to students who have faced barriers to employment, such as lived experience of mental illness, homelessness, are members of visible minorities or are newcomer Canadians.
