Natural Daylight May Aid in Type 2 Diabetes Management.

New research suggests that office workers with type 2 diabetes who are exposed to natural daylight have healthier blood glucose levels, improved fat metabolism, and better circadian rhythm regulation than peers who work exclusively under artificial lighting.

Health Alert: Air Pollution Linked to Higher ALS Risk and Faster Disease Progression.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease—is a rare condition that progressively damages the neurons
responsible for movement, eventually leading to loss of muscle control and death. New research suggests that long-term
exposure to air pollution, even at levels considered safe by federal standards, is associated with an increased risk of ALS
and other motor neuron diseases. Researchers also found that higher pollution exposure may be linked to faster disease
progression. These findings suggest that inflammation and oxidative stress triggered by airborne pollutants may contribute
to both the development and progression of disease, highlighting the public health importance of improving air quality.

Diet: Dietary Diversity May Lower Depression Risk.

Questionnaires completed by nearly 13,000 children, teens, and
young adults revealed that eating a greater variety of foods is associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms.
Frontiers in Nutrition, January 2026

Exercise: High-Intensity Exercise Effective for Reducing Body Fat in Seniors.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of exercise that involves short bursts of near-maximal effort followed by periods of moderate-intensity recovery.
In a recent study, researchers found that over a six-month period, HIIT was more effective than moderate-intensity
training at reducing body fat and preserving lean muscle mass in older adults. Maturitas, December 2025

Chiropractic: Psychological Factors That Can Impede Chronic Low Back Pain Recovery.

Kinesiophobia (fear of movement) and pain catastrophizing (describing pain in exaggerated terms) are psychological factors that can develop in
individuals with chronic low back pain, leading to behaviors that may prolong pain and disability. To support recovery, a
multimodal chiropractic treatment plan often includes educating patients about their condition, reassuring them that it can
be effectively managed, and encouraging a gradual return to normal daily activities.
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, January 2026

Mental Attitude: Many Medical Physicians Lack Training to Confront Death. An evidence review of 43 studies
found that medical schools in the United States provide inconsistent and often limited training in death and end-of-life
care, leaving many future physicians underprepared to support dying patients and their families. Experts note that better-
prepared physicians could help reduce patient and family distress, limit unwanted treatments, lower end-of-life costs, and
better equip doctors to cope with the emotional demands of medical practice. Academic Medicine, January 2026

Wellness/Prevention: Small Reduction in Alcohol Intake Could Prevent Cancer Deaths.

Researchers at La Trobe University analyzed 70 years of national data from Australia and found that alcohol exposure accounts for a substantial
proportion of deaths from cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract, liver, colorectum, and breast. The research team
estimates that reducing average alcohol consumption across the population by about 22.5 servings per year could
meaningfully lower mortality associated with these cancers. British Journal of Cancer, January 2026

Chronic Respiratory Diseases Affect 1 in 15 People Worldwide.

Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, researchers estimate that approximately 569.2 million people worldwide are living with one or more chronic respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pneumoconiosis, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary sarcoidosis. While genetic factors can influence susceptibility, experts note that long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, combustion-related air pollution, occupational dust and chemicals, allergens, mineral dust, and infections are primary drivers of poor lung health and disease exacerbations. Addressing these exposures could substantially improve respiratory health worldwide.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition that occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist. One treatment option available to patients is carpal tunnel release surgery, which severs the carpal tunnel ligament to reduce pressure on the affected nerve to resolve the numbness, pain, tingling, and weakness symptoms associated with CTS. When is surgical treatment for CTS necessary and when should a non-surgical option be pursued?

Health Alert: Stressor-Associated A-fib May Be Misunderstood by Many Doctors.

Atrial fibrillation (A-fib) is a common heart rhythm disorder linked to an increased risk of heart failure, stroke, cognitive decline, and dementia. An
analysis of 30,265 new A-fib cases found that many occurred in association with temporary physical stressors such as
surgery, infection, or other acute illnesses. While clinicians often assume this type of arrhythmia is temporary and may not
recommend long-term preventive care, the findings suggest that stressor-associated A-fib carries a similar risk of future
complications as traditional A-fib. Circulation, February 2026

Diet: Fatty Acid Intake May Influence Depression Severity.

Using data from the National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey, researchers report that higher dietary intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)—an omega-3 fatty acid
found in marine sources such as fatty fish and shellfish—is associated with a lower risk of severe depressive symptoms.
British Journal of Nutrition, February 2026

Exercise: How Exercise May Protect the Brain from Stress.

Chronic stress has been shown to weaken the blood-brain
barrier, which helps regulate neurochemicals linked to mood. A recent study found that physical exercise increases levels
of a protein called Fgf2, which may counter the effects of stress and help preserve blood-brain barrier integrity. These
findings may improve our understanding of how physical activity influences the risk of mood disorders.
Nature Communications, January 2026

Chiropractic: Lower Extremity Limb Alignment Can Affect Low Back Function.

Biomechanical assessments of 60 patients with chronic low back pain revealed an association between lower-extremity malalignment and deficits in both
postural balance and physical performance during movements involving the lumbar spine. Doctors of chiropractic
commonly assess the full kinetic chain in patients with chronic low back pain, as musculoskeletal disorders of the foot,
ankle, knee, and hip often co-occur with lumbar spine conditions and may need to be co-managed to achieve optimal
patient outcomes. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, November 2025

Mental Attitude: Body-Focused Teen Girls More Likely to Develop Future Mood Disorders.

University of Warwick researchers report that 17-year-old girls of normal weight who engage in constant dieting, “clean eating,” and intensive
exercise are more likely to exhibit mental health traits that can develop into anxiety, depression, psychological distress,
and poorer overall well-being by age 20. Current Psychology, January 2026

Wellness/Prevention: Oral Microbes May Hint at Future Obesity Risk. An analysis of saliva samples from more than
600 adults revealed that individuals with obesity had distinct oral microbiome patterns, including higher levels of
inflammation-linked bacteria and lactate-producing microbes associated with poor metabolic health and increased risk of
type 2 diabetes. If future research confirms that these changes precede the development of obesity, it may lead to a saliva-
based test to identify individuals at risk before excessive weight gain occurs. Cell Reports, January 2026

Whiplash associated disorders (WADs) can be a very confusing condition characterized by a myriad of symptoms stemming from a forceful, rapid back-and-forth motion of the head and neck. While this process commonly occurs during a rear-end crash, it can also arise from a slip-and-fall injury, sports injury, physical abuse, or any type of trauma involving a quick, forceful impact. To understand how this happens, let’s discuss the mechanism of injury and how fast the head and neck movements are that occur in a classic rear-end collision.

Health Alert: Viral and Genetic Interaction May Contribute to Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks nerves in the brain and spinal cord, disrupting communication
between the brain and the body. This damage can affect many functions, including the muscles involved in breathing,
such as the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. New research suggests that people with a prior Epstein-Barr virus
infection and certain genetic variations in human leukocyte antigens (HLA) may have an increased risk of developing MS.
These genetic differences may allow Epstein-Barr-infected immune cells to trigger an immune response that damages the
myelin sheath, the protective covering surrounding nerve fibers. Cell, January 2026

Diet: Eat More Fruit!

A systematic review of 151 studies found that higher fruit intake is associated with a lower risk of hypertension and high triglyceride levels. Journal of Lipid and Atherosclerosis, January 2026

Exercise: Social Seniors Are More Active.

Researchers at Texas A&M University report that older adults with strong
social networks, support from family or friends, and regular social participation are more likely to stay physically active—
a key factor in healthy aging. In contrast, seniors who experience loneliness or social isolation are more likely to live
sedentary lifestyles, which can increase the risk of chronic disease. Texas A&M University, January 2026

Chiropractic: The Effect of Smartphone Use on the Neck.

Neuromuscular assessments of 40 adults revealed that
prolonged smartphone use is associated with increased activity in upper back muscles and altered muscle balance,
contributing to changes in sagittal posture and increased strain on the tissues supporting the head, which may raise the risk
of neck pain. To reduce the risk of “text neck,” individuals are advised to hold their phone at eye level and to break up
prolonged device use with periodic stretching and movement to allow the muscles to rest.
Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, January 2026

Mental Attitude: Depression May Signal Early Brain Disease Risk in Seniors.

According to recent research, depressive symptoms in older adults may be an early indicator of brain changes that can precede neurodegenerative
conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. These findings suggest that mood changes later in life
may sometimes reflect underlying neurological changes that develop in the years before more obvious symptoms appear.
General Psychiatry, December 2025

Wellness/Prevention: Small Daily Changes Linked to Longer and Healthier Life for Seniors.

Analysis of UK Biobank data suggests that modest daily lifestyle changes may extend longevity in older adults. An additional five
minutes of nightly sleep, two minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and a half serving more vegetables per
day were associated with approximately one additional year of life expectancy. Larger increases—19 more minutes of
sleep, two additional minutes of exercise, and two extra daily servings of vegetables—were associated with up to four
additional years of healthy life expectancy. eClinicalMedicine, January 2026
