I’m not anti-medication. I’m pro “working smart” with your medications and medical team.

Most of my clients with autoimmune arthritis come to me with more than one diagnosis. They sometimes have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or digestive problems, acid reflux, and metabolic, blood sugar or insulin resistance, and cholesterol concerns. They are typically taking more than 1 medication.

It’s my job to ensure their custom food and supplement plan addresses any gaps or side effects from the meds, and to ensure that any supplements I recommend to address pain, fatigue or inflammation aren’t contraindicated with their treatment plan.

I also ask them to communicate with their physician about what they’re doing and why so we are all on the same page. YOUR page.

That’s how a healthcare team works.

If you want professional support in customizing your anti-inflammatory food and supplement plan to address the metabolic, digestive and immune drivers of disease, comment CALL and I’ll send you the link to schedule a complimentary intro call.

Credentials and professional designations matter. But you can have someone with a gazillion letters who has zero understanding about your needs as a person, not just a diagnosis.

This is where experience and willingness to work with others matters for team YOU. Especially when you have more than one diagnosis which is common with inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and the dozens of co-Dx with autoimmune disease.

There is no “I” in team. Healthcare professionals should have the experience you need + a willingness to work with others.

If they’re not there, those are red flags and opportunities missed.

When you have autoimmune arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, mixed connective tissue disease, psoriatic arthritis or one of the dozens of other diagnoses …

You typically have more than one specialist. And it’s hard to connect the dots about what’s best for you.

The body doesn’t operate in silos. Your joints, bones, connective tissues, muscles are interacting with all the systems in the body which is why medical bodies recommend nutrition and lifestyle support.

If you would like guidance on how to connect the dots, questions you should be asking, comment CLASS below and I’ll share the link for my next masterclass where I can help you with this.

Having a healthcare team with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis...

Having a healthcare team with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis or one of the dozens of diagnoses under the rheumatic umbrella often means having a lot of different specialists.

Autoimmune arthritis often comes with a lot of digestive problems, hormonal imbalances and skin problems so sometimes we are also seeing GIs, endocrinologists and dermatologists in addition to our rheumatologists or internists. Sometimes neurology and cardiology are involved, depending on symptoms and metabolic health concerns.

Having worked in integrative health clinics, I understand how important it is for all members of a person's healthcare team to be working together. To be communicating and collaborating in your best interest. To streamline testing, medications, food support and supplements.

Put simply ... Sharing is caring.

So whoever is on your team, I encourage you to start speaking up and sharing, if you don't already do so. It can be life saving.

I have 30+ allergies. I’m super sensitive to my environment and environmental trigger are often the cherry on top for the expression of autoimmune disease.

The body is overloaded with inputs and not enough resources to lower inflammation which is what is causing damage to tissues, glands and organs.

Allergies
Toxins and chemicals
Pollution
Mold
Virus

Supporting these start with a custom food plan specific for autoimmune disease, digestion, lymphatic flow and circulation, reducing stress (or rather improving how your body responds to stress).

This process has upward actions which then help clear or improve how your body is responding to your environment.

My name is Vanessa Bond. I’m a CNP with 13 years experience in working with adults and kids with rheumatic disease and inflammatory arthritis who want to improve pain, fatigue and inflammation.

Stress is an ugly word for “the nervous system” and people often get it wrong which is why you ignore it.

It’s not the people, places or things around you, it’s how your body is responding to them.

This happens behind the scenes, on automatic. Thoughts, feelings, habits will launch a cascade of hormones and chemicals that:

Ignite an immune response

Suppress digestion, thyroid and reproductive hormones

Increase blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure

All while you have a smile on your face, and push through whatever is triggering these actions.

Improving stress metabolism is not normally where I start people with rheumatic disease who have a lot of pain, fatigue and inflammation.

A customized diet, digestive support and some gentle movement is more concrete and deliver immediate relief.

However, “stress” is definitely an ongoing contributor to autoimmune disease and needs to be supported at one point. When you’re ready and aware.

My name is Vanessa Bond. I’m a certified nutritional practitioner with 13 years experience who works with adults and kids with rheumatic disease and inflammatory arthritis to address pain, fatigue and inflammation.

If you’re at that point, comment INFLAMMATION, and I’ll send you a free guide that breaks this down. It’s for you if you have rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, or one of the diagnoses under the rheumatic umbrella.

I see this a lot. The focus on nutrients and gut health, while ignoring the role of the lymphatic in immune regulation, levels of inflammation, pain and fatigue.

This matters with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory arthritis, lupus, Sjogren’s and Hashimoto’s because a breakdown in the lymphatic vessels is connected with the development of these diagnoses and your symptoms of pain and fatigue.

Your lymphatic system is part of your immune response, swelling, waste removal (natural detoxification), and nutrient delivery to your cells.

The most effective way to support this circulation and flow is movement because it doesn’t have a pump like your heart.

Gentle, somatic Yoga, Pilates, swimming with deep diaphragmatic breathing are the best for joints and lymph flow. They also work best when you’re sore and tired.

My name is Vanessa Bond. I’m a nutritionist serving adults and kids since 2013 with inflammation, pain, fatigue and digestive issues.

Not only is your gut responsible for breaking down food into molecules to support your immune system and fight inflammation …

It’s part of your immune response when you have rheumatic disease like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory arthritis or one of the diagnoses under the rheumatic umbrella.

Acids that kill bacteria
Immune cells in digestive lining
Waste / toxin removal
Microbiome diversity

Gas, bloat, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux … while common, these are signs and symptoms your gut needs a little love even if you don’t have a gut disease.

My name is Vanessa Bond, a certified nutritional practitioner who works with adults and kids with rheumatic disease and inflammatory arthritis improve pain, fatigue and inflammation since 2013. Digestion is always part of the solution.

Rheumatic disease and inflammatory arthritis often comes with nausea, heartburn, indigestion, constipation and diarrhea.

If you experience some of these daily, pay attention. They are the obvious signs that your digestion needs some support and it’s impacting your nutrition status.

Nutrient insufficiencies (not enough) and excesses (too many of the wrong type) are part of the pain, fatigue inflammation cycle with autoimmune disease.

This is true for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, mixed connective tissue disease, fibro or the dozens of inflammatory diagnoses under the rheumatic umbrella.

This is related to inflammation and having the resources your body needs to not just lower inflammation but to aid with repair and recovery.

My favourite to autoimmune anti-inflammatory diets are the ITIS, a modified paleo, AIP (core and modified) and I’ll also use a lower histamine or fodmap when there a lot of IBS like symptoms.

These plans are templates. They are meant to be customized to the person, so if you’re following one of these and not seeing the results you hoped, it’s either the wrong plan for you, you’re focusing on just removing foods or you have some digestive problems going on, which I’ll explore in my next reel.

Acute inflammation happens with a trauma. A surgery or flare are good examples.

My mother in law stayed with us this week. Her right hand is in a cast from an operation and it’s hard to cook for herself.

I prioritized protein, brothy meals, healthy fats and lots of fibre so her body has the ingredients it needs to help with healing. It was all also “spoon friendly” because using a fork is hard right now.

I’m happy to report she’s doing well and everyone in the family also loved what we were eating. It’s actually not much different to how we eat regularly. That’s what happens when you have a plan and know which anti-inflammatory foods and ingredients are best for your body.

Thriving with autoimmune

Hi! I’m Vanessa.

I’m certified nutritional practitioner, AIP certified coach, and founder of The Autoimmune Family System.

I have over a decade of clinical experience with hundreds of clients (adults and kids), teaching them how to use evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle planning to reduce inflammation - digestion (IBD, IBS), hormonal imbalances, skin, arthritic conditions, allergies … and of course, autoimmune.

My focus is helping my clients regain control over autoimmune and their family life so you can have more energy, freedom and confidence to live life on your terms without having to spend a small fortune on supplements or lab tests that cost as much as your mortgage - oh! And I do so without having you give up fun food or treats!
